Default 1985 944 Fuse/Relay Box Concern

Hello everyone,

Just purchased a 85 944 that had "electrical issues". It turns out the entire fuse and relay box under the dash have been disconnected and pulled out. Without having to track and translate wiring diagrams, does anyone have a picture of the back of the fuse/relay boxes that i can use to cross reference?

Thanks for the help!

Dear Andrew: From reading your description, it appears that your 85 was in the last run of “early” cars. After the change in the latter part of 85, many of the later car parts will not interchange with the early cars. There should be 5 or perhaps large square plugs that go into the back of the main fuse panel. There is also an auxiliary fuse panel as well. It has about 8-12 fuses in it and no relays. Download the parts manual, called the PET. Also download the workshop manual. Lotsa great info here on R-list and on Clark’s Garage. Welcome aboard!!

I pulled these off some ebay listings some time ago.

Hey everyone,

Thank you guys so much! The description and picture help a ton! I wonder what the previous owner was doing disconnecting everything, it seems that everything is original and untouched so hopefully it is not a systemic issue down the line. Thank you guys again!

Thanks also for the pics! They will help me a lot on my rewire job! Andrew.. The fog lights on this car are not fused. If the double relay that controls them sticks, it will burn up and melt the central wiring harness, which is a disaster . This relay may be original. It is located way above the gas pedal mounted on a cooling duct. It has two white connectors going to it. Only the cover of the relay is mounted. Give the wiring for the two plugs a pull and the relays will pop out. Replace them. Then put them back in the cover. They are held in with tabs on the cover. The relay should cost under 50.00. Good luck. My relay stuck and destroyed my central harness, which I have been repairing since last November. This is how I know. Good luck!

Quick update,

So its seems that I was right in saying that someone was in there disconnecting basically everything. I will attatch some pictures, might be hard to understand whats happening haha. On that note, can someone provide me a link or some pics of the 1985 944 under dash wiring diagrams? I have spent a couple hours looking and cant find the correct year/location of diagrams.

Thanks again!

Kinda looks like mine! If you download an early car schematic and print it off, then take it to an office supply company and get it blown up so you can read it. I took mine to a local UPS store, and they ran it off in 4ftX2 ft sheets. Do you know German? Some of the colors may be printed in German. Use “translate” on your phone. You will see the block letters on the schematics . They correspond to the pics that you have of the panel. They take a bit of getting used to, but they are pretty straightforward. Or, if you get stuck, pm me and I’ll help you out with the translations. Good luck!

Good afternoon,

Just Pm'd you about the diagrams and schematics. I still haven't been able to find these for the 1985 944 unforunately, if anyone has a copy of the wiring diagram right at the fuse box that'd be awesome!

Thanks, Andrew

Your early 85 is identical to an 84.
