Default noob here, just saying hello...

As I'm new here I just wanted to introduce myself. My names Herb (obviously) and I'm looking into getting a Porsche, most likely 944. I currently have an S4, and hate it, but am stuck with it due to it's resale value, or lack there of. That leaves me with a budget of ~5k in which to buy a Porsche. I realize that this isn't a whole lota money for a car, but I've seen a few 944's around me for about that much, but I had a few questions..

1. Any years particularly bad? Is it worth it to get say an '87 over an '83?
I know an S or S2 would be ideal, but a little out of my price range.

2.What should I look for in a used 944?

3. What are the maintenance costs associated with a 944? I can afford a few hundred a month on upkeep, but any more than that might be a little hard.

4. Anyone selling a 944 in the DC area for about 5k?

Thanks for all your help, I've heard great things about rennlist and I'm glad to be a part of it...

i would get a post 85 car due to updates in suspension, newer dash, etc....

recent maint. on the timing belts and front seals/ water pump idlers etc. is ideal because of the price of shop labor- unless you can do it yourself, then you save about 2000 bucks.

if you get a well maintained car and keep it up, they are fairly cheap and reliable if you do your own work.....check out the search on this site, or clarks garage, i believe it is www.clarksgarage.com

The higher compression of the late engines bumped HP and torque up a bit, but the late cars are a bit heavier, so it's a similar driving experience. The 83s were the lightest, and have the fewest options... so they're a bit simpler to work on.
You might be able to find a good condition S for that price if you wait a while and keep your eyes and ears open. FYI, there's a turbo for 7K for sale on this board:

Welcome, and ditto to what was said above.

I know of someone close to me that is selling a very nice dark grey 87 for around $5K. Might be worth a short trip from DC. I could have him contact you with pics and info if you are interested.

Welcome!
They're great cars and not too bad to maintain if you can do your own work. I agree with xsboost et all to. The newer dash is much nicer, not to mention a higher steering wheel that makes it more comfortable to drive it you're tall.

I'll keep my eyes out for anything in the area. If you're interested in taking a look at a couple of different 944's and some other porsche's there's a get together this weekend. Check here for some details:

I know there will be at least turbo or two and an S2 there. Happy shopping!

Hello Herb,

There are some really nice cars out there within your price range. Have fun searching for the right car and give preference to sellers who are enthusiastic (i.e. know something) about 944s.

Welcome to Rennlist!

SamGrant951- I would love to get 25k for the S4, but I know thats a dream. The problem with the car is it's been in the shop most of the time I've owned it. I got it in December, and its been to 4 diffrent Audi dealers a total of 5 times for a total time of about 2 months in the shop. Oh, and its there now... That wouldn't bother me too much if I liked the car, but I guess I really wanted a sports car out of it, and it turned out to be a luxury sedan thats kinda quick...

I'm glad to see some members from good ole NoVA, and I'll try to make it to that meet this weekend!

Thanks again to all...
-Herb
