Recently I acquired an EU spec 1984 944 with little to no history on it (in terms of maintenace work done). Today I discovered it has the stuts for the automatic tensioner (the actual automatic tensioner is not on it). That makes me assume a later >85.5 block has been swapped into it. Looking at the engine number I find an odd engine code, being M44.NA and additionally DOT is stamped into the block (see top picture). Usually, it would be something like M44.01 which allows to identify the model year. Due to the M44.NA stamping I'm unable to identify the engine, I'm not even able to identify the year. Additionally, I found what appears to be code 944 101 110 3R on the block and 0046/3 (see bottom picture).
I would greatly appreciate any help in identifying at least the model year of the engine.
I did notice the hand stamped numbers, but was simply thinking it may be a factory replacement engine and the stamping was done by the dealership. I've read that some engines are out there with no stampings at all and it is hypothesized they could be factory replacements, see: https://924s944.com/2019/01/28/engin...-and-hp-oh-my/
I have the original Swiss registration papers, and km's. Just no records on what exact service was done when. Plus the dmv we have over here have checked the VIN and ran it through their database. So yes, little to no history but it should be a fair car.
The issue has been resolved. I found some documentation that proofs Its a M44.01 engine that has been rebuilt by a Swiss Porsche dealer in 2002. They stamped in the M44.NA number.
You know, only of peripheral interest, but in the US military, some inductees enlist with no middle name on their birth certificate. Apparantly a choice their parents can make. The military abhores a vacuum so their name becomes something like John NMI Smith i.e. no middle initial. I sounds like the dealership didn't want to see a blank space after the M44 so they put something in there! Maybe in Switzerland, can NA stand for Not Available?

I spoke to a Porsche specialist here in the Netherlands and they said NA is typically used by Porsche dealerships for engine replacements. Doesn't seem to be a Swiss specific thing. I think NA indeed stands for Not Available.
