Climate control panel smoking
Hi everyone,
I’ve been trying to get the AC going on my 87 turbo. I used the R134 conversion kit from Griffith and after refilling the compressor with their oil, changing out a bunch of o-rings, and installing a new receiver/drier, I was able to start filling the system with my manifold gauges. It was actually working, with vent temps getting colder. After I moved onto my second 12 oz. can, my control panel started smoking with a horrible, acrid smell. I shut everything down as quick as I could.
This panel smoking also happened to me several years ago in this car while driving when I turned on the AC to see if it would do anything. It fried my control panel, so I installed a good used one, but never tried it again until today. Both times, it only happened with the AC button pressed. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening? Thanks!

Just for the sake of keeping my inquiry alive, here are a few photos of the control panel circuit board and the fried plug. It seems like it's getting too much current, but then it surprises me that the fuse or relay didn't blow. I checked that the fuse is a correct 7.5 amp.

There is a post here on rebuilding the wiring harness on an early car, where similar things happened due to a relay sticking, thus bypassing the fuse and causing all kinds of mayhem to the wiring. On that car, there is a separate relay that is present under the dash; is that the case with your car, as well? I think that an '87 would be an updated design, but I have never looked into this part of the wiring on my car, so I'm just connecting some dots here.
I'll look up the thread and post the link here, if you haven't already read it. Link: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...g-harness.html

Is that plug connection A2? The wiring diagram shows the blue/white wire is for the interior temp sensor. Perhaps the little fan motor is bad and has shorted to ground. I'd pull it out and test. Could have a short in the harness too.
