Default Do I need this?

While cleaning the power steering rack, the rag dislodged this piece which fits below the steering knuckle and enclosed gear housing (?) I had a look in a number of different catalogues but couldn't find any such animal.
Is this essential? Nice to have? Don't worry about it? Unusually for a Porsche piece (I assume) is that there is no identifying number. Hoping someone can suggest a source for replacement should it be a good idea to do so. Thanks!

I would say the answer is yes, it's there for a reason. That being said, if you can measure, maybe have one 3D printed? Lacking that, heat and glue existing one back together.

Honestly, do you think Porsche would include something THAT COST THEM MONEY TO INCLUDE if it didn't seem to the experienced design engineers at Porsche that it made sense? I can just imagine the meetings between the engineers and bean counters where the engineers have to justify including this component. Hell, I've experienced similar myself in my engineering career.

The Porsche engineers of 40+ years ago know far more about your car than you ever will. Some poor German guy had to go through a bitch of a meeting to fight for you, the customer. So, just ***ing replace it.

I'm sure that's more common than not. I still have not had any success finding a replacement.

while it is a dust shield/splash shield, the bearing is covered by the aluminum triangular cap (shown in that diagram above).

i *might* have a spare one of these, send me a PM to remind me to look for it

Mine was broken into pieces, so I dont run it. But I also dont drive my car daily and only bring it out on occasion, so its probably not needed. I guess if you drive your car daily and in normal conditions its probably good to have (as others mentioned, it is there to protect from grime getting into the top bearing). I also keep my car incredibly clean.

A) What's up with you? If that's supposed to be cheery banter it's not translating. At all.

B) There is no historical evidence that the Porsche "bean counters" of this era won a single battle, in any meeting, at any time, for any reason.

Under any other circumstances, this wouldn't be up for discussion. But since it's a track car and not used that often as well as appearing to be an unobtanium part, I've posted the question. Of course, this could all be down to a nasty little cleanliness compulsion...

I could try to 3D print one/some for you. I have a resin printer that mostly turns out OK parts, on the things I've tested. I'm happy to try to help.

Cheers

A kind offer that I may take you up on. Meanwhile, Spencer is looking for a spare and I just found the piece (think aquatic bird) but is a part of an entire (and expensive) gasket replacement set for power steering. My quest continues...

It wasn't cheery at all. I was in a bad mood for unrelated reasons, and I apologize for the tone of my posting. It was completely inappropriate.

Historically, though, Porsche was under significant pressure to design a low cost sports car for Volkswagen+Audi. These components would not be there if there was not a justifiable reason.

Always strange to me to imagine some Porsche employees making every little decision like this. My guess is a Porsche engineer did not make this--or many other--decision; parts like this are supplied by those that make them (ex. ZF).. and those companies promise a certain longevity.

This dust shield may or may not be critical--would take a study to determine, and I doubt there's data--but it probably looked great in the catalogue

FYI I have been daily driving on yellow konis for years and years without dust covers..
