Default Torque Tube inside diameter and is the damper necessary?

I'm going to replace the noisy torque tube bearings on a 1979 924 turbo transaxle and need to know if bearings for other models will work (944). Are the inside diameter of the torque tubes the same?

My second question is about the damper in the torque tube; are there any negative effects of leaving it out?
Thanks in advance for any answers or suggestions.

John

hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me chimes in but I do know the 924 Turbo and 944 have a 25 mm input shaft. the 924 is 20 mm.

This is correct.

The ID and OD of the torque tubes are the same. The main difference are the drive shafts in early 924s which have a 20mm drive shaft.

Later model 924s, 944s and 968s all have 25mm drive shafts.

So you need to confirm which size drive shaft you have.

The dampener does soak up some of the vibrations except if the rubber elements are hardened and damaged.

Also Porsche did not use them in all torque tubes. For the extra vibrations from the 944S2 3 liter four cylinder engines, Porsche chose to slice the torque tube from the engine to the shifter location. Unfortunately this caused other problems for owners.

This modification extended into the 968s and was stopped sometime in 1994. Porsche then used a dual mass flywheel to control the engine and driveline vibrations.

Our rebuild products were designed to dampen the drive line vibrations so these old dampeners and slit torque tubes don't have to be reused.

HTH.

J1NX3D,
Thanks for the quick response, I did check and the shaft is 25mm.
Thanks again.

Constantine,
Thanks for the information. I'm replacing the tube bearings and wanted to be sure they were interchangeable. The shaft is shortened and mated to a RX7 input shaft so,
I will leave out the dampener.
Thanks
John
