Looks like its time to get a spare set of keys. I can't lock the 944 drivers door without the key but I can lock the passenger door with out the key. I keep a spare plastic key for one of my other cars in my wallet because I can lock that without the key. That little plastic key has come in very handy too many times.

Speaking of getting into places with the wrong key...

I was in a hotel during a conference once (and yeah I had a few drinks) and I inserted my electronic card key into the door, pushed it open and saw a couple of old people in MY bed.

It was then that I figured I probably went into the wrong room. I sure as hell couldn't find it but the front desk clerk had someone escort me to the right place.

Yeah, I went to get something out of the glovebox once and after going in through the passenger side I put the keys down on the seat, then absent-mindedly locked the door. Fortunately it was in my driveway and the spare keys were in the house a few yards away.

Thanks for all the info gents. I assure you I am no thief. I can understand the some of you apprehensions of my with my 33 posts. I got in with the coat hanger. The screws were striped to hell on both reg tag lights. I think everyone should strip their reg tag screws after all this so no one's prescious porsche is stolen. Mine wont be, its got no motor.

Thanks for the feedback Rich- This is one of those subjects that always scares me a little.. I always keep a spare set hidden IN the car (in case I lose my keys when I'm out) and another set in the house.

Probably overkill, but I have locked my keys in the car via the "hatch" method- felt like an idiot.

I, um, locked my car keys in the hatch before, on my other car.

I've successfully used the coathanger trick.

Anyway, my solution is that I ATTACH my keys on a fob to my belt loop, when I'm out. One of the few things I ever paid for at Porsche, lol.

I just got a small spare key (just go to wal*mart & get your key copied onto the "AUDI" blank) and keep that in my wallet.

About any key working, this happened to mine. What happens is the pins in the lock cylinder get gummed up & dirty over the years and don't spring back into place. So basically anything inserted in the key hole will turn the lock. I'm sure it happens to many old cars, not just 944's. The remedy is to disassemble the lock, clean it and re-grease. Now I could break another key off in the lock if I wanted to and it won't budge.

Black Diamond spring clip carabiner. Got it in Utah. clips to anything and wont mar anything. forged aluminum - very light and will support about a ton.

I feel lost without it.

I don't use this anymore, but maybe I should. A couple decades ago I was on a canoe trip and one of the people on the trip overturned and lost their little bag that they'd stashed all their stuff in to keep it dry, including their wallet and keys. Thinking about what to do when locked out with no key or cash or even ID and I came up with a plan. I had a key made on a blank with no rubber or anything on it so it would be nice and flat, the same blank you'd put in your wallet but that wouldn't help if you lost your wallet too. Then I looked under the car for a convienent spot and settled on a flat spot under the driver's seat, I scraped off the gooey undercoating and using a self tapping screw I fastened it to the bottom of the car. I used a screw with a hex head that also had a straight slot so it could be removed with pliers or a knife blade and ran the screw right through the hole in the key. I got a can of spray on under coating and gave the spot I'd scraped off, along with the key and screw head, a light coating. With the undercoating replaced you really had to look to see that there was a key there and nobody would suspect it was there in the first place. If I were ever in a real bind I'd be able to remove the key with just about any tool that I could beg, borrow or steal (even a pull tab from a soda can would probably have worked), scrape the gunk off of the key (5-10 minutes with a finger nail) and open and start the car. I never ended up needing it and haven't bothered to do it with the 6-8 cars I've had since then, but if your prone to getting locked out this might be a good idea to try.

You stole my thoughts. I have employed this trick on my daily driven probe. I stashed a key under the car along with a house key too. I have a habbit of locking myself out of anything with a lock. Scaling the wall to the second floor in the snow became a hastle so there it is. Agian embarrasing but just sharing info.

Hope you can have a laugh at my stupidty.
