I did the same thing as Geo when my ignition switch went bad. I however went to autozone and got a 50 amp toggle switch and a push button switch. Works great.

Hey guys, I was at autzone to see what they had cheap..and they had some ricey switches..but I could always spray paint the covers black instead of "anodized" plastic (how they come ) and there were 12 amp switches. Would that be okay to use to turn the ignition system on? They have the button itself designed for starters so I'm not worried about that

Why not just order good racing parts from Paragon. Give those guys your business instead of Autoclones.

Give them the Longacre part numbers I listed earlier. They will be able to get them. Call them. If they can't get them for you, I can, but I promise they can.

12amp main toggle will NOT work. It will fry the switch.

I tried it and failed. Trust me on this.

So hide two keys in your car. How many keys can you lose? It will still be a lot less money and hassle than what you're doing.

Default old post, but check this out if push button starting interests you

When I saw the website below I remembered seeing this discussion. Check out what Toyota has done to eliminate the need for a key totally. This is the only way I would ever do this to my car.

It would be a fun project to retro fit something like that to an old car. A hell of a lot more work then worth it, but it'd be an interesting conversation starter.

Default Cayenne, Toureg practically cousins

I guess it makes sense that the Cayenne would have that option too, since the Toureg is built with alot of shared parts (not to mention the chassis).

Haha. I wish I did this! I lost my keys 8 days ago and have yet to recover em.

I will do this as a backup if I ever loose all my keys. Keep all the switches hidden and use the key unless I dont have it...

Thanks!

Mike,
Since you're still considering doing this, I thought of a setup that might work. If you can get a toggle switch strong enough to handle the amperage of the ignition system, you can set and leave the ignition switch in the "On" position, then add the toggle switch in the main line coming off the ignition switch. You could then have your start button wired from after the switch to the starter. As I said before, if you can get a toggle switch with enough amperage, flipping the switch would be the same as turning the key to the 'On" position, and the start button will crank the car. I'm not sure if it's feasible, but I hope this helps.
