I found that a serious buyer that appreciates the money put into a car to bring it back to "near concours" shape will pay more than the guy wanting a bargain to fix up. Who knows. Depends on a lot of factors. If you have the only S2 in a 50-mile radius...and it's mint, I think it becomes a seller's market.

As a fellow S2 owner, I have a vested interest in high S2 prices but I think $12K is above the market value, even for a car in great condition.

I'd put the spread at $6K-$10K for fair to good examples.

Thats a very good point as well. You could always try selling it at $12K and see if people bite...

Yeah, I think $10k is about it as far as a good coupe goes. I paid $9k, and have invested an add'l $3k (about) getting the car looking and driving the way I wanted it.

If I were to sell it (and I'm not at this stage), I would advertise it for $11k...and see what happens. You mention enough goodies, and take enough detailed photos...someone who is sick of seeing virtual wrecks will appreciate paying a little up-front for a good example.

I paid $12K and I've put another $7,500 into it in 3-years. And if I sold the car, I'd probably get $10K (tops)...

Not exactly a bargin, but then again its a keeper.

Karl-- I remember seeing your substantial collection of mechanic's bills when I first got my car! You spared NO expense...and put a ton of money into that car! That said, it STILL cost you less than a new Taurus!

And which car would you rather drive?
I think part of 944 ownership is accepting the fact that the cars themselves aren't worth much money, which isn't all that bad. Personally, I kind of like having less money sitting in a car.

As for ongoing maintenance, if you drive it, you pay. If you track it, you pay even more. Most 15+ year old sports cars are going to need it as well, so if people don't like it, they should get the Taurus instead.

Karl,

As Andy mentioned, I'm also amazed by the fact that you have a virtually new Porsche for less than the price of a boring, mid-sized sedan! I need to keep records as well as you do for my baby...

Hey Andy

I think it all comes down to what you use the car for. The S2 makes a much better everyday car, but the 911 is great as a weekend car.

I'm lucky enough to drive both occasionally (see my sig) and they're both great cars, but VERY different. The 944 is better, but the 911 is more fun, if that makes sense!

My advice, keep saving... get a nice 911SC to go with the S2!

I have no plans to just buy another Porsche! The object would be to sell one high-maintenance cost car, and buy another one! You can't "just keep" the 944's without running into the belts/water pump costs, and who knows what else down the line!

What makes the 911 not "better" and more fun?? Is it too raw and loud to take in anything but small doses?

bought my 89 s2 for 8k, invested another 4k, but the money does'nt tell the real story, its all the blood, sweat, and (no tears yet). all the hours spent the last 2 winters in our back shop at our business. you know when you've had a bad day at work, go in back and work on the toy for a few hours...
now that is therapy!! i'vd got it to about 85% by my standards, a couple more winters of work and a little front end paint work and it should be about 95%. thats about as far as i care to go since i do like to drive it and not just sit and look at it... by the way who's going to the mid-america motorworks (formerly tweeks) funfest june 5th and 6th?
we've got a small caravan lined up from central wisconsin so far....
enough rambling for now, i don't even try to think how much i can get for the s2, it's not in the cards yet!
have fun

Too true. I was just daydreaming...

The 911 is definitely has more of a 'classic car' feeling about it. The fabulous noise and the strange feeling of the weight of the engine out back are definite fun factors. Plus the narrow cabin, floor-hinged pedals, random layout of switches... all part of the charm.

When I say the 944 is 'better', I mean in a rational sense - more forgiving handling, more room in the interior, better heating/demisting, better mileage, etc.

They're both great cars - but to a large extent it comes down to personal preference, and budget. As you say, the 911 is a lot more $$$...
