1983 944 low gas light

Default 1983 944 low gas light
My low gas light is lit, but very dimly. Have 1/2 tank of fuel, so it's not out of gas. What would cause this ?

Wire from gauge to sender is leaking current to ground somewhere along the way. Yellow with a black stripe. Check around tank through porthole in trunk(?) first.
