Default Windshields

So what does anyone do for windshields currently? Mine has a crack from a regular wrench falling 2inches onto the bottom edge. The crack is now huge. I see Safelite is now useless for me as they cancelled the repair. They said the glass is obsolete and unavailable. Insurance will fix it for free if I can find a shop this way.

This would be a time to reach out to your closest dealership. That's what I did and they referred me to an independent that actually performs windshield replacement for that dealership. I ended up getting genuine Porsche replacement glass.

On my S2 I got a quote from my local independent shop in 2020 for a genuine Porsche windshield and State Farm paid the cost less my $100 comprehensive deductible. I got P/N 944-541-011-12 (tinted w/antenna). The shop did not do the installation... they had several guys come in and they all said "no" so they contacted one of their "pros" and he drove down 50 miles for the installation. He also brought a new gasket as the one on the "new" windshield was old and a bit brittle. Good luck.

Last fall, I finally had my original windshield replaced. When the sun hit it, I could not see for the pitting

Insurance paid for it, minus deductable. My dealership does not install but they did supply the glass. I also got the tint with antenna

The glass came Made in Belgium labelled Saint Gobin Sekurit. It is identical to the original even tint colour

I found an installer willing to do it. He cursed up and down while removing the old one. Note that I helped him as there are interior parts to remove due to installer having to get space for tools

The entire stiff rubber mount is integral to the new glass and the old one must be removed from the car frame; ie. you don't just cut out the old glass. He spent considerable time scrapping out old frame right to bare in the channel (no doubt thoroughly as I was watching lol)

He picked up both the glass and trim and the dealer gave the wrong trim. PET appears to show a change in trim after a certain VIN but it is wrong. The trim should be U-shaped not a full 'circle'

I am glad to have factory glass. Try to find someone with previous experience. Using factory glass is not a "regular" job (due to integral frame)

Remove interior A pillar & headliner trim beforehand

How come your insurance covered glass replacement? Never thought to ask ICBC (gov't insurance here). I have the same problem when the sun is low; to the point I once had to drive with my head out the window to see. I asked about polishing out all the micro scratches from 35+ years but was told it wouldn't work. Currently looking for a new windshield but hard to find. 6 months ago a glass shop near me could bring one in from the East coast but the price put me off. Should have done it then as I have to see.

I have no answer why insurance covered the glass. I called, asked, and they said yes.

Probably a saftey issue

They did ask that I have the installer purchase the glass. His business quote from the dealer was a bit less... but not much.

The quote I originally got from the dealer--officially presented on paper--seemed completely made up:

$1234.99

I pay additional for glass coverage, it's not much at all and totally worth it for these cars. I had it when my 951 had a windshield replaced about 8yrs ago and it was $650 then and paid $150 for it.

Wow that's expensive ... i've had two windshields replaced on the race car in the last five years by a local guy who comes to my garage
to install them , two years ago it was $350.00 Canadian... cash money !
From what i remember they were readily available at the time.

Dan , next time you need a windshield replaced , take a road trip to Montreal and i'll set you up for a replacement !

Cheers
Phil

Try sourcing a cabrio windshield! Paid $800 last summer from Porsche dealer and they wouldn’t touch the install with a 3 meter pole. Did it myself. If I ever want to inflict torture on someone I will make them scrape that damn gasket out.

Tint & antenna? Doubt it. But, I don't doubt a good time in Montreal; perhaps one day I'll scoot up there

Speedy Auto Glass replaced my windshield but used a generic rubber seal and bonding agent (non oem-it seemed like a worst case scenerio fix but actually looks pretty good). $350ish I am pleased with the results. When ordering I asked if it came with a gasket/seal & was told no. So ordered a genuine Porsche one from Pelican for $70. The installer said it won't work. So $420 I guess.

Interesting... some time ago, I went to a Speedy in my neighbourhood... they flat out said there is no windshield available and even if it was, it would cost around $1600 just for the glass!

I drive around with 6 pt harnesses, full cage, no windows in the doors, big huge numbers on the door and as long as im “ behaving” cops dont give a crap.. i have a muffler that i toss on for the street and put my rain tires on… i say in a pinch.. go lexan no one will know
