I need to get my speedo out on my 84 NA so that I can change my odometer gear. How do i get the trim off so i can get at the speedo and other guages? Also, my clock doesn't work all the time... any suggestions??

Its much easier if you pull the steering wheel off. I forget the size of the socket, i think its like a 24mm or something odd shaped like that. Basically you first need to reach behind the dash and push the temp/gas gauge foward. The gauge will pop out, disconnect the wire-harness and set it aside. Now you need to reach into the hole where the gauge was and disconnect the speedo cable, and push the speedo gauge fowards also. Not too hard to do, but 100x easier if you take the steering wheel out.
You dont need to remove the housing or trim, just push the gauges foward and they pop out.
Forgot to mention, you will need atleast a 3 inch extension to get that bolt for the steering wheel off. Also make sure the wheel is perfectly centered before you pull the wheel off.

On mine there was a wire connecting the speedo to the tach - for the mpg gauge i think, so if you don't take the cluster out and unplug the wire from the tach you will break the little circuit board on the back of the speedo and you will have to superglue and solder it all back together after taking the cluster off anyway (i know this for sure!!). It's only two screws, the steering wheel and a bit of jiggelling holding the cluster in.

I've done this last week, on a '84 also I went by Clark's tips
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-06.htm
Also, here's how it looks like

Oh, my site is in dutch, but "Volgende" means "Next" so you must be able to view the pics
It's a 24mm socket indeed btw!

You might want to replace all the bulbs while you are there. I found it easier to pull the whole cluster as I don't exactly fit under the dash. I second the "be careful with the little wire that goes to the mpg gauge".

Yea, clark's has a good explanation.
In step 5. The screws are just under the dash at the top of the palstic gauge trim.
In step 8, I always have to remove the column trim.
When you get the speedo out you have to remove the black trim that holds the conical plastic cover (bezel,i think). The speedo case is like a can with open end bent at a 90 degree angle to the sides. That black metal ring is actually bent around that lip. You have to take a very small screwdriver and gently pry up the black ring from the back. Work around the circumfrence a prying it up a little at a time. Eventually, you'l be able to slide the ring and bezel off. The speedo is held in the case with one or two screws on the back.
The gear is press fit on the shaft. It sometimes breaks or slips on the shaft. I tried gluing my gear back on the shaft, but it only lasted a couple of weeks. I need to go back in there with stronger glue and try again.
Hope this helps.
