How do you check your coolant level if your expansion tank is as yellow as mine? I can't even see the liquid in there to tell if it's between min & max. Is there a trick or should I just pony up the $80 or so for a new tank?
How hard would it be to replace the expansion tank myself? I can do an oil change but haven't tackled much else in engine bay. Thanks!

Replacing in it pretty easy. Few screws and a hose. Going to take you no more then 30mins. If you can change the oil then you can do this. Depends how yellow it is and how much money you have to spend.

Try shining a light on the side of it first. You might be able to see it then.
Or maybe there's no fluid in there to see. Hmmm, better go remove the cap to make sure.

Im having the same issue. How can I check my coolant level is ok with my yellow expansion tank? Can someone with a clear tank and proper coolant level when cold measure with a ruler how deep into the tank from the lip of the filler cap? Much appreciated.

Shaking and the use of a light are helpful, but if it is that bad, be careful that it doesn't crack on you especially if you drive the car hard and outside temps are hot. It is one of the relatively inexpensive and limited replacement time projects to do and makes things look better. Also replace the cap while your at it. The seals on them don't last long and it effects the H20 temp.
