Porsche 944 shims on the oil cooler
Hello, I have a weird issue going on with my oil cooler. Did get a hold of the updated case 6R and was waiting ages for the plastic spacer to arrive. Now when assembling the cooler into the case - all went smooth but measurement does not make any sense. The manual (and everyone else) states 0-0,25mm. I can put a feeler gauge up to 0,33mm. But the shims have 0,5mm... If I put it in, obviously the flat edge I am using to measure is lifted now. What are my options? Run without the shim and pray in German language? Run one shim and hope the rubber spacer behind will "adapt"? Or get a sand paper and run the shim to almost half of its thickness? Many thanks for any pointers.
Regards,
Frank

I don't know for sure so in that case "pray in German" is my first choice for you. But I would also consider sanding the shims to make them thinner. You are right, shims that are thicker than the gap you are trying to deal with are not really useful.

I actually had a brainfart...I did measure at the bottom part which allowed the cooler to wiggle a bit more. When my panic mode ran to cool down, I did measure it on the side closer to the middle of the housing which allowed for better stability and without a single shim I am between 0,2-0,22. So I did install it without a shim. But thank you very much for quick reply.

The way I've always understood it, the cooler should sit as close to even with case, without protruding out of it. It makes sense when you look at how the mounting surfaces on the block are machined. They are all on the same plane with each other, so if the radiator protruded out, even a little, it would prevent the case from compressing the o-ring as much and/or put an undue amount of stress on the radiator.
