Default Can you tell good gearbox from bad without installing?

I have the orginial gearbox in my 924S @ 200k miles and it's showing age - there is considerable driveline slack, making it hard to drive on and off gas in 1st and 2nd (clutch and driveshatfs have recently been replaced). I can't change gear quickly from 1st to 2nd or it will grind. Ring and pinion gear are making old fighterplane sounds on accel/decel. There is loud worn bearing noise at any load, especially in right turns - I believe it's one of the output shaft bearings. Output shafts also have both radial and axial movement, is it normal?:

I'm all about diy, but I don't think it's worth rebuilding mine, I'm shopping for a lower mileage used one. I might be able to go buy 1 or 2 from Germany - are there obvious wear signs to look for when I'm there?

No way to be sure except to install it in a car and drive it. There are many problems you will not find on a bench (e.g. bearing noises, bad or broken synchronizer rings, etc.)

When I sold transaxles here in the USA, I always tested them in my 944 mule before I could guarantee them.

If it's an original 924S transaxle it might be worth it to you to have it rebuilt. Genuine 924S units have shorter 5th gears, which makes them more usable on the track. My own 924S came to me with a non-original 944 unit in it.

Just to clarify for interstate cruising you would want the 944 5th gear but that is only for fifth gear, or does that affect all five gears?
