Rear Passenger Clunking
#16
I’m assuming I should replace the UJ’s for the entire rear at the same time?
Any direction on manufacture or best place to source? I don’t track the car, just weekend driving.

The rear of the car needs to be safely placed on jack stands. Try to move the half shaft axle back and forth to detect play. Compare passenger to driver side movement and/or excess play. Clarks Garage website might be helpful and use advance search on RL.
The ONLY acceptable replacement CV U joint is GKN, the others are trash.

One caveat is the EMPI Vanagon Type 2 U Joints which are compatible with any 944 running a 33 spline rear axle shaft (I believe late model cars).
They also come in a chrome moly version
Running these non-chrome moly ones on my S2 and I have found them to be of high quality and good price.

As far as the wheel bearings go, I may have to give the stub axles a check with a dial indicator as suggested by Tiger. When I replaced the bearings they came out and went in fairly easily, but I did need to use a drift to remove all but the outer passenger bearing. That one just fell out. The stub axles also took a good bit of force to get in. If the stub axle doesn't have runout, would it be reasonable to assume that the bearing seat in the trailing arm is worn out? That seems unlikely to me, but I guess it's possible.
put in new CV joints.
only other (less likely) culprit might be the inner trailing arm bushing, but I think that would cause a clunk that is not necessarily related to speed, moreso turning

Youll have to pull an axle and check. Once removed you should be able to see the back side of the joint, where it mates to the trans or stub, a circlip and some of the splines slightly protruding which you should be able to count.

After reading the title of this thread I was going to suggest turning around (while stopped of course) and telling the passenger to stop clunking.
I didn't read the whole thread closely but... have you checked your transmission mounts? Mine were in bad shape and gave some of the same symptoms.
