It's a tamper-proof indicator that you apply to bolts. It let's you know if the nut or bolt is backing out/loose or if someone tampered with the bolt. Very handy to have for suspension work and vibration prone areas.

Miller - probably not the cause of your failure, but please do read the following links. Vibration causes havoc with these engines and I've seen it do a lot of crazy things. The vibration is almost always from a balance shaft belt that has jumped teeth on the gear of the lower balance shaft and the link titled "alternator" has a diagram pointing out a tolerance that is very important when setting up the balance belt. Failure to follow this causes the balance belt to jump teeth, which results in the lower balance shaft being out of time, which causes severe vibration, which causes problems. Again I agree that the bolt that came loose had probably not been tightened, but vibration could "assist" it in backing out and vibration is not healthy for our engines. Please make sure this base is covered.
