Default Shocks replacement

Okay so its getting close to me having to replace my shocks on my 86 924S soon. Most of the threads seem quite old so just want to see what the latest opinions are.

I like using factory parts as much as possible but the local dealership says the shocks for this car havent been in production for years (they were made for Porsche by Koni). I was able to get the shock top mounts and bump stops new though.

Koni have new yellow shocks for these, so that seems the best option but the shock is an insert that goes into the fronts and you have to fill the sleeve with coolant. No sure how keen I am on that solution. Some guys say to rebuild the fronts but im not sure how.
The rears dont seem to be rebuildable so not not what to do there.

Any recommendations ?

You can have the front struts and rear shocks rebuilt by Koni. They offer the service but the cost can be higher than simply replacing the shocks and struts. Koni makes replacement shocks and struts that are direct bolt on replacements.

As for oil in the strut tube, some strut manufacturers recommend it while others do not. it depends on the brand I suppose. I've always put a thin light coat of oil on the strut before inserting it into the tube. I was lead to believe that it helped with heat dispersion.

Do you have any part numbers for those Koni front struts ? I checked the website and it only lists the inserts.

just replace my rears with the generic ones from tire rack (1990 944 s2 cab)

67,000 miles on the original rears. the new ones bolted right in place...improved the right immensely and restored almost an inch of ride height in the rear.

Now that the rears are back to where they need to be, it shows the fronts need it just as bad. I am ultimately just going to buy the replacement full struts at $300 each.

Default Koni Front Strut Insert/Cartridge Installation

A tech did this conversion for me last evening. He converted the original Koni struts to the new Koni inserts/cartridges.

Parts cost $320 and it took him 2.5 hours to install both.

Appears to be the only way to go. Koni does sell complete front strut assemblies for $2,000 okus installation of say, 2 hours.

The conversion took him maybe 15 mins per strut.

I order a front and rear set of 924S Konis.

So the rears a straight swap but the front require the struts to be dismantled cleaned and either coolant or motorbike fork oil added to the sleeves that the cylinder goes into.
