Default quick CAT question

my cat must be hella clogged. its hard to start my car. My car at first had a nasty vibration and i thought it was my motor mounts but it wasnt, changed them anyway. the vibration is even worse when i get that done because now i have a very nasty exhaust leak.

now last night i was driving home and the cat fell down and was dragging on the ground. i took it to a shop and the guy gladly welded it right back togeather for me. so now im tihnking im going to start the car and its gonna sound just aweosme now that i got rid of that leak ive had for a while.

Well no, the car barely even starts. on the third try it violently starts then runs fine. there is ALOT of noise coming from the cat hitting the head shield around it.

SO HERE IS MY THEORY tell me if im way off. the vibration was originaly form my cat being clogged. then the crack came form the vibration along wiht the backpressure. then my cat just fell off because of the vibration finaly breakin the weld. NOW that i have it welded back togeather nice and tight it is WAY worse because there is so much back pressure. I have a deffenite loss of power. i can only go about 2krpms in any gear without the exhaust vibrating so loudly i cant take it anymore.

now heres my actual question. can i just take the car to a shop tomarrow andhave them put in a new cat. like just a standary regular old cat. or do i need to find a used porsche cat? i really want to just take it over there and have them saw it off and weld a new one in with the pipes or whatever to make it fit. Im supposed to be driving all the way up to Damians house for his G2G saturday afternoon.

thanks alot

Well, The 944 cat's are very different form a "normal" one. They are long and skinny. But I am not sure if you can just have one welded in. I guess you can do anything, But hopefully someone will post on the correct fix. Have you done a rennlist search yet?
You have to update your pics in the sig with the C-2's

It would not pass emissions. They will not do it. It is Illegal to do that to a non track car.

Maybe you should take it down to the shop, have them remove the exhaust, lower the car crank it up. If the problem is really a plugged cat, that will cure it immediately.

At least you'll know that is the problem.

i have a vibration at idle, when the clutch is not engaged. It probably vibrates at any rpm, and i just cant here it over the engine noise. I beleive it's exhasut, and latly I've been having inclings of thought towards my cat being a bit clogged. is there a way to test it without taking it off? what kind of vibration did you have?

If you have a clogged cat (hairball?...I digress), you will probably have an increased engine compartment temp due to increased exhaust gasses in the system. I know that was ONE of the symptoms mine displayed. Along with a strange red glow from underneath the car.

check the recent thread "cheapest possible cat" it's probably on page 4-6 now. I think most of the info you need is in there. Good Luck, let us know what you do, I'm in a similar boat.

You don't need a genuine Porsche cat to pass emmisions. If you know how to weld and have the equiptment...f*ck the law and put a test pipe in and when inspection comes put the old one back on. Or if you know how to weld just buy a $30 cat weld it in and pass emmissions (better idea..less power, and a little louder), Even the shop will do this for you, they'll just won't reccomend it. They'll probably charge less than 100 bucks.

So, guys, removing the cat and using a strait pipe will increase or not the power?
