Hmm the 17mm tool can be found at Sears for like 5.99$. Make sure you can get the fill plug off first before you remove the lower one. I agree with the people that said "flip them and grease" this way you will rule out that problem only took me about an one hour and a half.

Still sounds like the cv's. Jack the car up and take it out of gear. Start by tunring one of the wheels kinda of quick back and forth. You will probley hear some noises then if it is the cv's or the tranny. Look at all your bushings like someone else stated.
