Mystery rear noise
Well my mech couldn't duplicate the 'issue' I've had on a rare occasion. Happens maybe 2% of the time. So maybe it's nothing, but anyhow, I really hate 'not knowing' so I really wanna figure this out.
So what happens is this:
Issue:
-sorta clanky, rubbing, grinding type noise that comes from the rear, most probably from the rear axle/suspension area
-very rarely there a minute hesitation or jerky-ness that also occurs
When:
-Seems to only occur after driving the car fro at least 30 minutes. The car has to be warmed up and driven for this noise to occur.
-Tends to occur when accelerating from a dead stop in 1st gear. At first I thought it was my shifting/clutchwork, but I'm releasing the clutch and engaging the gas as smoothly as possible.
-usually only lasts a few seconds while accelerating at low speed
-seems to happen more often when accelerating on an incline?
Notes:
-My exhaust rattles a bit, but I think that's completely unrelated
-One of the last documented services by the PO states that the car was test driven for a noise in the rear and then the rear axle was re-torqued. Perhaps this is the same thing?
So any idea what this rear noise is? trasmission, axle, suspension??

Good question, I wasn't really paying attention to whether it happened while turning or not, so I'll see if I can notice a difference next time.
Anyway, CV joints - I'll keep that in mind.

How loose is your parking brake? Have you replaced your brake pads recently? I have a similar noise that only happens when coasting and has me stumped.
All 4 CVs are new, new rear and front wheel bearings, new front and rear brake pads, new front rotors... I'm beginning to think the worn parking brake shoes are binding inside rear hubs.

Hmm interesting. My parking brake doesn't engage unless you crank the thing waaay up as far as it goes. And no I haven't replaced the pads. I think it's pretty much shot.
Maybe you're right and that's what's causing the noise.

I'd say CV-joint also. You almost decribed the same symptoms I had when mine went. The outter (or is it inner?) drivers side tends to dry out because it's so close to the exhaust.
You can "flip" the half-axle (this will be #3 do-it-yourself for you) or buy a repacking kit and repack and replace the boot. Easy job - just VERY messy!

With the radio off, I just noticed when I'm coasting to a stop there is also a very mild creaky/clanky noise coming from the rear. Basically *creak* pause *creak* pause... As I slow down the frequency of it slows, so it has something to do with rotation obviously.
Maybe it's the parking brake? Or is that a sign of cv joints still?
If something needs to be done though I won't be doing the repairs myself... maybe if I had owned the car a bit longer and knew it better I would try to tackle it, but I dont' feel ready for going nitty-gritty with the suspension and chasis yet.
Anyway I will keep people updated on the mystery noise. I'm intent on solving this eventually.

If it's an erratic screeching sound, I'd say it was caused by the rear wheel bearings. The sound in my 83 is more like a grinding-humming sound, as if something was dragging the wheels.

Exactly! However, I believe this sound is related to the parking brake shoes, not the wheel bearings. In my 10 years of experience with the 83, wheel bearings are either a loud humming sound or erratic screeching, irrespective of acceleration.
This is a more grinding sound, that only becomes apparent when letting off the gas pedal.
