Lightbulb 944 Trailer hitch.

I know I am going to regret posting this, but I would like to offer anyway.

Well, here it is. I have designed an all aluminium trailer hitch receiver for the 944. I have purchased the material and will be fabricating this weekend. If anyone would like the design and material list, just let me know. I will try to put details, some pictures of the construction, and end product over the weekend.

Cheers,

SCular

Sounds good to me. I fabricated one from steel a couple years ago, but it would certainly be interesting to shed a pound or two.

There's a picture of the factory unit that is floating around somewhere if one of you can find and post it. I have no scanner!

Ft. Desoto, yep. My plan is to fabricate it,ah, later today and Saturday; then drive out to Ft. Desoto Sunday.

Yes, I have seen the image of the factory one, mine is very similar, as it connects to four points of the car. The ones that I have seen that were homemade either were just bolt to the bumper or use the bolts that hold the bumper on.

Just got a new Miller TIG, so I need to try it out.

The other nice thing I only have about $50 into this project, so it is a very inexpensive Porsche project.

hmm...4 points:

2x points where bumper shocks attach to frame (just have a plate that goes between bumper shock mount & car & upgrade hardware?)

2x points where the KLA tow hooks attach?

Theres someone on Pelican who made one. I have the pics saved on my comp. IIRC it used four bolts as well, not bumper or anything halfassed.

You are all almost right, one small correction four mounting points (10 bolts), probably what you meant.

The main structure is made from 1.500" square tubing with 0.125" wall thickness (this makes the receiver size the standard 1.250"), and the plates that bolt up to the car are 0.250" thick plate.

As soon as I finish this project I will have an AutoCad file with all of the fitted dimmensions for everyone. I don't have time right now, but maybe someone else would like to do an FEA or other rigorous analysis. I am interested in the capacity. I am sure by looking and the properties of the material that I am using it will far exceed the small trailers I will be pulling.

Just curious, what do you guys tow with your cars or are you just using the receiver for a bike rack, etc?

Little utility trailer to put dirty things on, like tires and lawn mowers, and a real jetski (standup). Nothing over a couple hundred pounds, that is what the family's PowerStroke is for.

One catch, the rear air foil on the turbo and S models, makes for a very tight fit, it may not work.

Oh yeah, can't do math, lol. 3x bolts where KLA tow point attaches + 2x bolts where the bumper attaches = 5x bolts x2 sides = 10 bolts, 4 points.
