Default Have to ask again....

How do you get to the ground on the engine? I want to check the connection. I guess the question is what size wrench and can you reach the connection with out removing anything? TIA Dal

Ground? I think it starts from the negative (black) battery socket, then splits into 2 lines, one going to the bellhousing and the other to the vehicle's chassis near the firewall.

This may sound silly. But I am in the process of removing my engine and am stumped in finding the ground strap as well. At this point, I have only the torque tube bolts, steering and cross member to remove before lowering out the engine.

I figure once I start to lower, I should find what ever is left holding the engine.

I've refered to Haynes, factory manuals and tech bulletins with no luck.

Any thoughts?

lilred....Strange isn't it! I guess I will pull or drop the engine as well or just lop the darn thing off at the battery and run a new one to a much better location and leave the old one right where it is. I apologize if I sound pissy but read the posts on some topics and the info is very technical and downright nothing but math equations but yet can not seen to get answer to a very basic question and proceedure in which according to the topics discussed, grounds is one all seem to have BTDT!
All I need to know is just as if it were the oil cooler...remove the PS to get it off.....what does it take to get the cable off? Specialty wrench or a friggin cresent wrench. So far I have got it is on the rear top of engine use a mirror and lay on an ironing board and it is a cable that goes to the firewall.

Sorry for the turse posting, under the gun and need to get things squared away.

Ok I am much better now.....Dal

it can be done without removing much, I think we just removed a coolant hose. I had the expert help of Dan(Iceshark) shoot him a pm or hope he chimes in, he makes far superior ground cables for these cars, and after removing my old one, I'm really glad I have the new one. I think the whole job took us maybe an hour.

DAL...LOL...I agree, it shouldn't be rocket science. Tonight I plan to drop the steering and cross-member, I'll look again.

Hey, maybe I'm strapless.

LOL again, sorry, not trying to gay this up, but getting slap happily fustrated as well.

I have the factory shop manuals and there is actually a picture of the strap. But damn if I could find it, maybe I need the ironing board and mirror. I'm sure my wife would be happy about that.

Well, good luck and let me know how you make out.

Also, like your pictures, nice ride!

If you mean the ground strap on top of the clutch housing, I used a 13 mm socket and a long extension to remove the bolt on my '83. The bolt is slightly off vertical with the head tilted toward the left side. Just move wires and hoses until you can get the socket down there. I managed to get my left hand on the bolt head and guide the socket nto the head while standing on the right side of the car.

The other end of the strap attached to a ground point on the firewall where the battery ground attaches.

Putting it back in is more difficult.

Ahh, I am strapless!!!

I have been searching for a ground strap that I thought went from the top of the bell housing to the firewall as described in Clark's and the factory shop manual. It has been described and I've seen pictures of a breaded-type strap.

I found that on my '86na, the negative battery cable is a 'Y' very close to the battery terminal. One side goes through the firewall and down to the bell housing as described above.

The other leg is approx. 6" long and is grounded on the inner side of the firewall in the battery compartment.

Not as I expected, bell housing to firewall.

Thanks DAL and 83na944!!

Ray
