My son recently installed a new K&N air filter on his normally asperated, 1986, 944. Since the installation, the temperature gauge is reading in the red zone. Since we are new to this type of installation, should we be making some other kind of modification for this? Should the thermostat be changed? Any help would be appreciated. The minute he removes the filter, the temperature drops. Does he need to somehow channel the air from the wheel-well up to this area, (like the airbox does)?

Seems strange. Is there a blockage? Sounds like its electrical, because yous ay the minute he does it, the temp drops. wouldnt it be a slower process of temp dropping in that case if it were because of the filter? maybe something with air resistance is mixed with the temp reading.. Grounds?

This has to be an electrical problem. Changing air filters/air boxes has nothing to to with engine temperature.
I would start with the coolant temperature sensor and work from there. The coolant temp sensor for the in-dash gage is between #2 and #3 cylinders on the throttle body side of the intake manifold. Check the connector and the two wires. On wire is signal and the other wire is ground.
