Default Is this typical brightness of post 85.5 944 instrument cluster?

I uploaded a short vid of my cluster at night. Is this typical of factory brightness/evenness across all gauges?

TIA,

Matt

That doesn’t look normal. There are 3 main bulbs that illuminate the front face of the instrument cluster. I think the two side ones are burned out in your case. Having said that your brightness from the center bulb seems quite good. My cluster was very dim with all 3 bulbs.

further info here for my fix…

It does look like your center bulb is doing most of the work, although there's some light on the outside two so I'm not sure they're burned out. Might just be that more of the silvering has flaked off the outside two light tunnels....

As Jey Jey mentioned... could be flaking reflective material. I redid mine by cleaning away the old stuff with acetone and using Rustoleum "Metallic Finish."

If you are going for bright... replacement LEDs are the way to go. Note that A) some of them are square-shaped and don't fit through the round holes in the cluster and B) they don't all dim very well. I stuck with incandescents when I redid mine... because I like my dash pretty dim at night.

So, removed the cluster. Upon inspection, bulbs were all (externally) foggy/dusty but functional. So I just cleaned them and popped back in. They’re very shiny, so we’ll see when I power back up.

I also took your advice and repainted the silver pockets as some of the prior reflective material did flake off. Not much, but fuel gauge pocket was the worst.

Lastly…. And here’s where I need your help now… I’d like to change the Speedo faceplate. Same as before, just cleaner. Mine has a ring of shiny, tacky material that I cannot remove.

I’ve searched the interweb with no luck. Anyone know where I can get a replacement 160 MPH one of these?

TIA!!

Matt

Maybe you've tried these... but it you are looking to buy a new plate anyway... possibly ruining this one wouldn't make any difference.

For my "sticky gunk removal" tasks I try the following in this order:
  • Isopropyl alcohol pads
  • Non-acetone nail polish remover
  • Acetone
  • "Goof-off"
And sometimes... wd-40.

Thanks. Yep. Tried them all. Alcohol started to remove the paint. So now I have 2 plates inbound to replace it.

Thank you! I was looking for something like this for hours. But wow, pricey!!!! ~$200 to re-create just the speedo disc!!! But thanks. This may come in handy one day.

I will also stay with incandescent light. I'd pivot to LED if there was a warm white offering and not the cool white light of modern cars.

Have you checked with North Hollywood Speedometer about refinishing service?

Is that picture of yours from MoMan? Yours look backlit or reflective. I'm not into that. I have a full cluster set in my cart for ~$150 delivered from Poland and I'm about to hit the button. Let me know. Thanks!!!

I used these leds. They are warm white FYI. However they are brighter than incandescents stock bulbs. They are dimmable.
