Default heater control valve

I found the heater valve on my February 1983 944, the cable is no longer attached to the lever in the heater control dept, it does not move at the valve. How do you get at the lever to re-attach the cable?
I see what my fellow poster said about coolant pouring into the timing hole if anything went wrong with the valve or hoses. I tried to put duct tape over the hole, could not do that, so I'm going to fashion a rubber bung ASAP to plug the hole.

I think that was me. I'm now in the middle of a clutch job.

The cable is disconnected from which end? At the heater control valve or the lever in the passenger compartment?

It attaches with a funny looking clip that is probably impossible to replace. Many folks simply substitute a tie wrap for the clip and it works well enough.

The plactic bracket that the three levers are part of, breaks where the special clip snaps on. I would buy and replace the bracket and get the proper clip(s). The reason is that the clips have these sharp little teeth that fit between the windings on the cable sheath to keep it from moving. Pull ties are just a waste of time.

Read where an owner made up a kind of a U clamp from small fasteners and thin sheet metal to hold/clamp the end of the sheath.

or you could place it in the later model area.
pm Aribop and he can tell you better.
easier to reach and no clutch worries.

I think my very early Feb 1983 is different from some pics kindly provided my those who wish to help. The cable is now not attached to the end of the long lever, cold to hot, because when you slide the lever from left cold to right, hot, the cable does not move at the valve. I have a mind to disconnect the cable at the valve end and move the valve lever manually to shut off the heat.

Mike, you're right that the early cars controlled the valve with a cable instead of a vacuum motor. I suspect the you can close the valve without disconnecting the cable from the HCV. That's a major PITA. Just reach in there and move the white arm as far toward the right side of the car as possible. That should close the valve.

I'd think you still need a heater up in the frozen north.

That very well may be, but FWIW I got my original clip back on the new HCV and the tie wrap fix was recommended by the other authority on early 944s, Martin Taylor of NZ and seemed to have worked well enough for him.

Luis, I think he's talking about the other end of the cable, inside the cabin at the slides in the dash.

Correct. I've never heard of them coming off the control lever. Can only remember the bi#@% it was to reconnect the cable at the firewall side!

Yep, I can't imagine being able to do it with taking it off the hoses.

I've seen three pull tie'd and none of them worked for long.

Note these did not pull tie the clip too.

so the arm is supposed to clip in somewhere too? i really think th people who put my motor mounts in broke the heater valve.....the moving arm broke off. the valve was just in there by the hoses holding it in place. when i tried to put my new one in, i was confused as to the original configuration and placement. and moving the switch inside didnt control the heat very well. i put my old one back in after switching it back to heat.
