With stars - Wish I'd have known, but just sold my '88 944 to a friend. Not white interior, but close at linen (nice combo with the Stone Grey Metallic). Such is life.
You'll get good advice here. Take your time. There are still a lot of these cars out there. Nice ones pop up from non-enthusiasts from time to time, mine did. It was the 12th 944 I actually drove out to look at and turned out to be a winner a first glance. Had 107k miles on it, but was very well cared for and in better condition than most of the cars I saw with half the miles. The process took 3 months or so, finally finding this car in the Sunday morning paper. I drove out, tested the car, etc. Owner was not a PCA member or Rennlister, just a nice banker in Chicago that used the car on nice days and took it to Florida once a year. I needed to get it inspected, he needed to go out of town... Long story short, I drove it home subject to PPI, left the wife's car in his garage, came back and paid him for it the following Thursday.
If it doesn't feel right, walk away and keep looking. Once you look over a 944 a couple of times, you get pretty darn good at assessing them in a hurry. A beater will nickel and dime you to death. Even a very well maintained car will hit you for $$$ once in while. Buy the nicest one you can find in your price range and you won't be disappointed.
I put another 53k miles on the car over 4 years and only sold it to make garage space for the 968 (needed a faster car for track duty). Most reliable car I've ever owned (and that's a long list).
Read, learn, look, be patient... You might even find that white interior car. I've seen a few. They ARE beautiful!

Ribs, thanks for the links and for keeping an eye out for me!!
Mike got your email and replied!!
Jaibeiber, thanks! I'll check it out!
BloodRaven, I'm leaning more and more toward waiting and getting a 951! By then end of the week I'll be wanting a 951S.... and now having seen what Rich is doing I want a Porsche in bad shape to play with, in addition to my perfect one....
I think this is contagious and addictive...

Ohh she's got the turbo bug before she even owns any 944! Don't let them fool you, an S2 is better than a turbo! Well, maybe not but at least I don't have a hair dryer under my hood! Well, not yet anyways
If you can find one and can front the initial difference in price though an S2 is a nice in between....it won't really cost anymore to maintain than an NA, unless something in the head breaks, then it's twice the price. 208 stock hp and a little more torque...same suspension and brakes as a turbo too. it doesn't have boost but it'll kick you back into your seat really well! If you ever come to FL you can ride in my car with a white interior! Well, it's technically called Linen but I think that's the lightest color 944 interiors really came in...I've never seen a solid white one.

Would not be a good time to bring up the idea of a supercharged 928 to our new guest?

Matt,
My "doner" short block should be home in the next week or so. I plan to build the engine myself, then throw a party to help me install it. Thanks for the advance help!
MTM,
Looks just like mine, except I have leather inserts in the middle of the seats.

Hey, do I have the ultra-rare linen interior? I always thought it was just light grey. My car must be worth a fortune now!

and welcome to lisa, good luck finding a car. i bought my 951 when i was 19, so you can swing it i'm sure. it's quite the uh, expense, on a college budget, but i've kept mine running. you know, mostly but i'm sure you can do better than i have (fyi:get maintenance records). have fun with it though, it's what they're made for
