Question need answers from wheel gurus

The PO put 17" wheels on my 86 951. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what they are. They look like the Cup 1 wheels on the Tire Rack web site but they are not the Mille Miglia wheels although they are Italian. I'd like to ID them but that isn't why I'm posting. There are spacers on all four wheels. Tonight I took a back wheel off and measured the spacer at 25mm. The wheel (9J x 17 H2) fits fine without the spacer as far as I can see. Why the spacer? Was he trying to make a wider stance? BTW the fronts are 7.5" and look to have the same size spacer. Why????

The wheels are late-offset ('87+) ones with probably 52.3mm offset. They will fit on an early-offset ('86 & earlier) car, but they will be inset into the wheelwells by 1". This looks funky and hurts handling. On the wider ones, like more than 9", they'll also hit the struts & springs in front. So the spacer is to bring the wheels' centerline back to stock positions for '86. Check out the "944 Wheels FAQ" on my 951 Racerx website.

The OEM wheels are made in Italy as well. You can probably find a 965.XXX.XXX number on them.

Danno, thanks for the web reference. That helps explain a lot about wheels and wheel geometry.

Anders, I've looked all over these wheels for a part number but haven't found anything. Must be some stealth manufacturer. OT - my ancestors came from Skivarp, Sweden west of Malmo back around 1900. I drove through the country about 15 years ago on the way to the Nordcap. Mighty pretty country.

Oops, should have said East of Malmo. Don't think they came from Atlantis.
