Default TDC sensor

I've enlisted technical support to help me do the clutch and I'm told to make sure I get penetrating oil to the TDC sensor on the bellhousing. Q? how the frick does one do that, from the top or the bottom.

There are actually two sensors on the bell housing. Take a look down from the driver's side of the car, you should see a braket with a couple sensors hanging there.

Or - there's a metal bracket on top in the back of the engine - follow them wires. USually there are black connectors on it.

Spray them liberally, and you'll need to gap them when you put them back in. A washer from the 10mm head bolts that hold the fuel rail glued to the tip works well here.

HTH!

My sensors came out easily without applying any pentrating oil. I would gently try to remove them at first without penetrating oil. Also some of the rear sensors have a spacer on them, if yours does be careful and don't lose it.
Be sure not to move the bracket the sensors sit in, there are 2 allen head bolts hold the bracket on. You should not have to gap them when you put them back if the bracket is not moved.

Charlie, you are 100% correct IF the block that the sensors bolt to (one 10 mm hex bolt each) is not moved then the sensors do not need to be gapped.

Beware, not to drop the 10 mm bolt into the inspection hole (where you check for TDC). No I didnot, but many others have. Go FISH.

Mine are out now since I'm in the middle of replacing the clutch. I think I know which one goes where, but is there anything that distiguishes the speed sensor from the reference sensor so I can be sure?

They're both the same sensors with the same part number. So they can go into either hole OK. Just make sure the proper one is connected to its matching connector on the wiring harness. Basically if the car doesn't start, swap sensor connectors and try again.
