Question 1983 944 rear brake pistons

Gentlemen:
I was trying to put in a set of rear pads the other day, in my '83, and noticed that the rear pistons appear to have a rather sizeable notch cut out of one side of the piston. I also remember something about "clocking" the rear pistons? Why do they need to be clocked? With the exception of the tang hole in the pad the pads are flat. My WSM CD got away from me so I don't have that as a reference. right now. Comments please...TIA

This pic from the WSM may help you visualize the orientation, the flat metal guide has a 20 degree angle, you turn the piston so it aligns with the guide. You can make the guide out of some thin metal or even stiff card.

From an earlier post by Rusnak in this Forum comes a template for making your own brake tool.

NB: I've added the vertical measurement with a 'best eye to accuracy'.

Does the protruding side of the "notch" engage in the hole in the pad? I had presumed the hole was for the tang in the caliper frame. Obviously, I've never done this before. TIA BTW..Thanks for the visual on the template..I'm sure that it will help..

The protrusion is to have the brake pads seat parallel to brake rotor for even wear across the brake pad
