Default Just changed MY FPR and OH BOY what a differance

My Fuel Pressure regulator has been going out for some time. I bought an adjustable regulator but did not put it on due to never getting around to getting a fuel rail gauge. With the impending 951 purchase I decided the adjustable FPR would go on that. So I just got a stock FPR and put it in. The idle smoothed up and dropped down to 950 RPMs and now I don't get black smoke under heavy acceleration THANK GOD ! ! ! Now the big question is will my gas milage come back?

ipsc

P.S. What is the right way to depressure the fuel rail? Don't ask me how I did it....

My guess is that your gas mileage will improve. That black smoke was unburned gas.

The easy way to depressurize the system is to pull the fuel pump fuse, start the car and wait until it dies.

Did you find a fuel pressure gage that fits the large fitting on the fuel rail?

Is this the right way to do it when replacing the FPR?

I did pull the fuse on the fuel pump and let it run till it died and then started the car over and over till it would not start. Still when I cracked the seal there was a lot of gas still under pressure. I bought mine from Don and EBS racing. Those guys are my favorite parts house cause they will answer any goofy question I can come up with (and there have been some goofy ones) to be sure. I am going to keep a close eye on the MPG here for a while. With the price of gas these days...

Pulling the fuse works for me. I guess you could open a fitting. It would mean that you spill the gas in a different location. Under the hood is a terrible place to have fuel spilling.

What are the performance symptoms of a bad FPR? I get the "balck smoke" thing too under WOT - but only once in awhile.

I have a definite performance issue and suspect a worn AFM instead.

Any ideas?

I use the quick and easy 'pull out' depressurize method. Even when I do it right I get a lot of gas, so .. I've stopped caring.

Rally Guy
Sounds to me like you do have a bad FRP. What is your definite performance issue? Mine has been a rough idle for a while. I suspect part of mine is my AFM. However the FPR change today has helped.
On another note I did some driving this evening and it seems to me that my engine doesn't rev quite as quick as before. Also if we get a good cold snap I will really be able to tell. When it gets below 35 degrees I had almost a 12 hp jump (as measured with a G-tech) So that was leading me to the bad FPR regulator along with the black smoke (Porsches should not SMOKE) under heavy acceleration.

I once had a FPR with such prejudice that the car was continually flooded. I managed to get it started a couple of times. When it ran, it REALLY ran. So the problem was so bad I killed the battery trying to start it. I suppose this was a complete failure.

BTW, one diagnostic is that if the fuel pump runs continuously, you probably got a bad FPR.

Hmm, I probably need to replace the FPR. My pump is always on. The constant pressure is probably why it began to leak gasoline. Whew, I hope this solves the idle issue!

My performance issue is one of inconsitant power delivery (often it's just NOT a 200 HP car!) and there is a slight hesitaton around 3500-4000 rpm at near full throttle - and jerkiness at light throttle around 2-3000 rpm - just driving calmly.

The throttle response is sluggish and the car feels like a turbo - even though every review I've ever read descibes the gorgeous, non-turbo like torque of the 3.0 L engine.

Every once in a great while the car pulls strongly - like I think it should and feels great - but this has become a very rare occurance - so I think something had finally failed for good.

The black smoke issue is what made me suspect the fpr for the first time - I've always thought is was prolly a worn copper track in the AFM. This car has no records and 263k kms on it - so odds seem good that the AFM is due a refrubishment - ala FR Wilkes site. Just concerned about what type of silicone is safe to reseal it with.

I am suprised that no one has mentioned 'applying vacuum to FPR with fuel cap open" method yet.
