Agree, my favorite thread on here. Fantastic find and refurbishment. Can't wait to see this time capsule out and driving.

Working on a few more little things on this car to get it 100%
Firstly is the dpd Air Conditioning. I actually found an install manual pdf

I replaced the receiver/drier and re-sealed the threads on the flared fittings of the compressor and it holds vacuum! once I finish putting things back together from the other bigger project, I'll test this fella out to see if it works!

The bigger project is the torque tube bearings.
I had a definite bearing noise at idle (and I'm sure when moving, though I couldn't hear it as well) that went away when I would put my foot on the clutch. So I set out to replace the torque tube bearings

This 924 has a 20mm shaft rather than the later 25mm shaft from the 944 and I think 931 so it uses different bearings. *** 6005.2ZR is what I used - the size is 47mm outer, 25 mm inner. (there is a spacer between the shaft and the bearing that makes up that 5mm)

Here's the noise when I got the transmission out of the way and the torque tube separated a bit from the engine:

So out it all came!







Then started to pull the new ones in:







So now I've got the torque tube back in, the transmission reinstalled last night. Got a new shifter linkage arm from only944 on it as the old bushings were pretty shot.
Need to re-bleed the brakes as they were disconnected as part of the rear axle work to get the torque tube out. Then install the exhaust and I'll be good to go!

Then I'll dump some old cans of R12 into this AC and see if it works!

What an incredible find and such an amazing job restoring the car! I really enjoyed reading your thread and I'll look forward to seeing updates as you continue working on the car! Did the car come with the original window sticker? You mentioned receipts for brake work...did the car also come with a lot of documentation for maintenance and repair?

Thank you! Not a lot of records and I have somehow lost the brake receipt.
I thought had the window sticker but can’t place it

So lots of good news!

the torque tube work is complete and it is now totally silent at idle

just rolled over 35,000 miles

also - the weird aftermarket AC works!!!! Converted to r134a and blowing cold!!

Found the culprit


This is the line from the evaporator to the drier. It had been run down low too close to the exhaust manifold and I think boiled, blew up. The install instructions show it run up over the strut tower. Now I know why!

Unfortunately, there is not a connection at the firewall for this as there is for the return line. I think I have to pull the whole box from the passenger's footwell to get this line disconnected, then off to my local Hydraulic shop to get a new one made

Bummer that there's no easy disconnect for the line. How difficult is it to remove the evaporator? Does the entire dash need to be removed to access it?
