Welp-
I checked my service records last night. About 2,000 miles ago I had the 60,000 mile service done (at about 65,000 miles). Among the things done was replace the fuel filter and also clean the injectors.
So the filter shouldnt be more than 2yrs old and the injectors should be pretty darn solid.
Could it be that the fuel pump is just gone to **** on me? I know Clarks Garage says the fuel pumps are rock solid and in most cases when they crap out its because of something else. That said, the fuel pump seems to whine way too often for it to be a secondary problem?

Nope. The dash is still cooky. Still have the "!". Perhaps its electrical and the car is just having a seizure on me.
Im trying to think how the car drove before we messed with the dash. I "think" it drove just fine. No problems.

The whining fuel pump is part of the reason I thought your FPR failed. When my FPR failed, the fuel pump whined continuously. I guess it was pumping at maximum capacity when it was whining. I think the whine is normal, but usually stops shortly. Pull the fuse, it will stop.

Welp I drove 20 miles to work this morning in the pcar and the whine from the right rear of the car was continuous the whole time and never let up. Something fishy is going on back there. Could the fuel pump be bad? Could a fuel filter replaced 2000 miles ago have gone bad?
How do I check the fuel filter. Can I spot it from under the car? Supposedly it was changed at the 60,000 mile service 2K ago but I want to eyeball it and make sure it doesnt still say West Germany on it or something. Basically to confirm it really is a new fuel filter.
Never before have I heard these whines from the rear of the car until these problems cropped up.

Pump is external. There is an internal screen to stop the big stuff before the pump.
Has anyone looked at the fact that the Fuel Pressure Regulator works with a thing called the Fuel pressure dampner that is responsible for holding the fuel at the rail? When I was throwing parts at my driveabliity problems, I replaced BOTH the FPR and the FPD. Kinda like the cap AND rotor.
With the problem you are having, if the FPR/FPD doesn't solve it, you may want to check the TPS (throttle position sensor) but it is only an open (wide open throttle) or closed type switch, it does not have a potenimeter type function. There is an air fuel metering device in the air intake, the AFM that uses a pentometer to measure air volume and a thermometer to measure air temp to yeild air mass entering the intake. A cheap bit to replace for the "fun" of it is the DME engine temperature sender. It tells the DME about the temp of the engine to allow for air/fuel mix adjustments.

I tried driving the car hard tonight as I came home form work. In second gear I decided to mash the gas on an entrance ramp. A symptom from the past showed up again. I hit the gas real hard and the car accelerates a little bit but then the car seems to just say "OK I need gas and Im not getting it, time to shut down" and the car loses power. I mean the car usually takes off like a F-15, but on hard acceleration the car just cant handle the inputs and after some RPMs the power just completely falls off the map. Almost like a redline rev limiter would feel. I let off the gas and give the pedal more of a transient gradual goose and the car will recover and accellerate -- yet still not like the car is 100%.
The fuel pump is whining like a hundred ankle biters at Chuck E. Cheese.
Oh by the way 944Pete, if you are reading, I didnt see the "!" light on today. I think we can rule out electrical issues. Of course it was during the day so a dimmed "!" might be hard to see but I did my best "telescope" with my hands to give me some darkness and I didnt see it lit.
