OT: Looking at a beater, comments please!
Hi guys,
Ok, so I will be insuring the 944 for the summer in the next couple weeks, however likely only for pleasure use....(I know I know I should drive it, but listen)...
So I have a job for the summer at least, maybe longer, and the only problem is the office is about 40km from where I'm living. So a round trip every day, assuming I don't go anywhere else, is 80km. I don't want to put this kind of mileage on the P-Car, I'm saving up for some badly needed tires, and my low mileage car will be everything but that by the end of the summer if it's my daily driver this summer.
So I've been holding on to my beater. The only thing is, it's a big old american 4.4L V8 with a choke problem, therefore it's fair to say that its horrible on gas. I will be making these long trips, possibly longer if I'm asked to drive around the province, so I'm looking at another beater.
My mechanic (who is a rennlister) is selling his Volvo 240 GT (can't remember the year) for $1000. It's a coveted 2-door Manual transmission model, 220k km, new winter tires (I dont care what season they are meant for), some rust on the door panels, but overall decent paint. I can get $500 for my beater from my nextdoor neighbours who want it.
How are these Volvo's on gas? Anyone ever had one? An huge problems to be aware of? I figure it has to be cheaper than my big gas guzzler.
TIA,
Brendan

They generally are pretty good on gas. My 740, is a heavy station wagon. and even that gets around 22-25 mpg... they generally have effecient engines. (and mines a turbo)

that may not be the best economy wise, but volvos are very reliable, my best friend stands by them. They will last forever, and take the abuse, maybe thats why they are called tanks...

Yeah, it's not a turbo, in fact the overdrive is screwed too...that's ok, in any case it should be better than my gas guzzler.
Brad, I was wondering when I was going to get a comment!
Maybe it doesn't fit in so well with this crowd, but the picture is from an old video game in the "Legend of Zelda" series, called Legend of Gamelon, for the failed system known as the Philips CD-I. It was one of the worst games ever and tarnished the good name of Zelda games.
I just found this picture to be shockingly hilarious, it is an iin-game screen shot; Link, who is one of the most popular game characters ever, looks terribly fruity in this picture; obviously many people will look at it the wrong way, but those with a sense of humour will get a laugh.
EDIT: BTW I'm not gay if you are wondering.

I'm guessing because you care about the mileage you don't want to sell the car.
If you plan on keeping it forever, who cares about the mileage? The car will get old whether you drive it or not. Look at Brian's car. At 197,000miles it looks cleaner than mine at 140,000miles.
If you take care of the car, you can put 300,000miles on it and it'll still be cherry. besides you can get pretty good mileage outta that 2.5L 4 banger.
