Default 35 watt Halogen #1156 Bulbs

For all of you that picked up the 35 watt halogens for reverse lights, brake lights, etc., you may recall that I had some reservations regarding the heat buildup on the plastic if the bulbs burned constant for over 10 minutes.

Well, those concerns are pretty much gone. I had my car in reverse and turned the radio on as I worked on some stuff forgetting that my reverse lights with the 35 watt halogens would be on. After about 45 minutes I walked around the back of the car and saw the lights on!

Turned them off and inspected and there was no damage to the plastic so the conclusion is you can use these in the brake lights in heavy stop and go traffic and not worry about the heat build up.

How about the 3rd brake light? That's the one that scares me the most (haven't had a chance to install any of those lights yet though....maybe tomarrow).

Scootin,

Yeah, that 3rd brake light would be a concern with the halogens. I know it will take it for 5 minutes but if I was going to run them in there I would drill a couple 1/2" holes in the black cover for venting. That is an awfully small space.

On my car I got a free sample of a 40 red LED board that is used in the light bars of cop cars. I took out the Porsche red lens and reflector and this board fits perfectly in the slots for the reflector. It is really quite bright, like a 35 watt halogen in the main brake lights, but low temperature. And because there is no longer a red lens there you really notice it when it lights up. This would be the perfect solution except for the fact that they are expensive. I think the suggested retail price is $60. Of course you could get them a bit cheaper off the internet but still they are going to be pretty expensive so I never went forward with offering them to Rennlisters. They are made by Able2 under the Sho-Me brand if anyone wants to fork over 50 bucks for a 3rd brake light upgrade.

How about replacing each of those LEDs with some of those 10,000mcd ones...?

Those are VERY hard to find with the 15mm single bayonet base that are a direct fit into the stock sockets. I got about 200 of them for Rennlisters awhile back and sold them for $6.75 each plus some minimal shipping. I had to sweet talk my bulb supplier into getting the German factory to make a new run of them.

But my supply of them is all long gone. If there is enough interest, say orders for 50 bulbs, I'll get some more if people want. The places to use them would be the back up lights, brake lights and the under hood light. Maybe turnsignal, but I personally would pass on that. They put out about 2 times the light as the stock 21 watt incandescent and do not tax the stock wiring. It is a nice upgrade.

Dan,

Recently I saw an Ebay ad, from out of the country, with LED's that fit our stock gauge cluster sockets. Any clue where to find them?

IceShark, if you ever do end up placing another order, I'll probably be interested in two or three of them.
