Best answer yet...
I posted this question to the other thread by mistake
Which would YOU rather have?
944/Turbo/S/S2
Mazda Miata/Turbo (whatever parts you can get for the same money)
Porsche Boxster
BMW Z4 3.1
Honda S2000
Audi TT Roadster
Nissan 350Z Roadster
????????
I think there should be a poll!
I choose the 350Z Roadster

...I'll bite my tongue here and practice self control, but I stand by my previous statements. And there's no way on God's green earth an 83 944 will touch a 90 G60 in a straight line. lol. Sorry.
Anyhow...have I owned a 944? Well, yes and no. I had an 88 944-S for about two weeks. I say I've never owned one because in the time I had it, I put less than 1000 miles on it and mayeb only popped the hood twice to wipe things down. I have been a 944 follower since I was about 8 years old, and I am not new to racing or tuning.
I agree with you that the SRT-4 is more bang for the buck...in a straight line...than the MazdaSpeed Miata. But in the twisties? There's no WAY I'd pick the Neon if a road course or canyon/mountain runs were my forte over that Miata!
But when all is said and done, even though I think the 944 is not any better in a straight line than a Miata, or a Cavalier, or my '89 Cadillac for that matter...the 944 is still my first choice if it were my $5000 in question. I've just yet to see ANY n/a 8v 944 break a 16-second 1/4 mile, that's all.

Otherwise if we are talking the same price and I had about $40k to spend I would get a new Miata and still have about $15k to spends on making it really fast. Of course this isn't the choice that makes the most sense but I have always had a thing for Miata's.
Here is a dyno chart from my Miata(the one that I would build that is)
Stroker kit
FMII turbo
