Instrument panel bulb size?
The 3 gauge lighting ones on a late-dash car, not the warning lights.
I have some 3W3 bulbs in a drawer, but I'd like to know if they're going to fit before pulling the instrument cluster out (again).

So the 168 is the same as a W5W (wikipedia) and the W3W and W5W's have the same dimensions (just different brightnesses).
All of which makes the W3W the same size as the 158 and 161 and in between them in terms of wattage.

There appears to have already been some heat damage from before I owned the car (although it's on the 12V feed to the oil pressure and battery gauges, not the lights):
But I'm a "dim lights" kind of guy so I think the 3W will be OK. If not, I'll probably go to LED...

Before I totally understood what you were asking, I was going to refer you to @Perry 951 , but thankfully he jumped to the rescue anyway.
If you go to LEDs, there has been a good amount of work done on the digital dash for the 928 which I think would be applicable to what you're dealing with. There are even products developed and for sale to help deal with the lack of full dimming adjustability if you go that path.
I'd love to see how things end up with this particular project, so I hope you keep sharing and documenting.
Cheers

I ended up replacing those 3 main bulbs with 'warm white' LEDs. You can see my finished product toward the bottom of the following thread. However, if your preference is more on the dim side, I'd say that these LEDs may be a bit bright for you. They're the lowest lumens LEDs i could find. I have them turned down about 50% for my use. I decided not to go with the 3.8W bulbs because I didn't want to risk overheating the rework that i did on the light tunnels (foil tape) and enclosure area of each bulb (painted white).
