Default Brake Job

I'm about to do my first brake job on a Porsche. Are there any special tools needed or any helpful advice or should this be a straight forward job.

Hi Wayne, it should be fairly straightforward. If you don't already have this site bookmarked, I'd suggest doing so:

www.clarks-garage.com

Clark has provided a list of all the necessary tools along with the procedures (search under "Garage Shop Manual"). You should be good to go.

fairly straightforward from Haynes as well. Really nothing out of the ordinary.
May I suggest changing all of your brake fluid if it's more than a year old...

Wayne, if you have done disks before it's nothing really fancy.

Where 'bouts Illinois Wayne?

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure there were no surprises.

We just built a house in Channahon. It's just SW of where 80 and 55 meet.

Are you just swapping out pads, or more in-depth repair?

The brake light came on and the outside of the rotors look OK. So I am hoping that should be it . But with these cars you never know.

Does your car have wear sensors? If not, you might be getting a warning about low brake fluid or low pressure in the master cylinder.

Chris 924,

I'm curious as to why your suggesting to change out the fluid if it's over a year old.

The fluid change is becuase brake fluid is hydroscopic (absorbs water). This can cause rust issues inside the brake componenets (pitting on the pistons, failed master cylinder, etc). Flushing the fluid helps to keep this from happening.

Also, "wet" fluid has a lower boiling temp. This can lead to brake fade in high perfromance situations.

I rebuilt my calipers last year. You wouldn't believe the sludge in the right front caliper. I suspect that routine changes might have prevented that. Still yearly seems like a lot. Maybe every two years?

If I remember correctly, the brake pad wear sensor and the brake fluid idiot lights are not the same. Which one of yours is coming on?

BTW, changing the pads on a 944 is probably the easiest out of any car I've worked on. I can do all four wheels in less then a half hour. The hardest part is taking off the wheel.

That's good to know Matt, I'm in the same boat as some of these other guys, gotta change up the pads and bleed the system...
