Question What kind of damage can occur from running excessively rich?

What kind of damage can occur from running excessively rich? I mean really rich. So rich that the crankcase vent catch can has a few cups of gas in it.

Will the gas harm the oil pump? I'd imagine the gas would wash alot of the oil off critical componenets. What would need to be checked? What's the best procedure for getting all the gas out of the oil?

well you might gas wash your rings. not really sure about additional damage, but changing the oil and filter is a real solid place to start

Changing the oil is about it, then follow it with another change in say 200 miles or so.

Damage? Gas wash the rings, foul plugs, not good at all for the cat., if you ran it really really really hard, may have hurt a bearing but not likely with normal street driving.

Other than that may have done a little cleaning inside the engine but if everything runs and sounds normal I wouldn't worry about it, just change the oil.

Has the problem been corrected?

I would fill it up with cheap oil, and 1 litre of ATF. That should give it a good flush. Warm it up to operating temperature, and get rid of it.
Then you should be good and squeaky clean inside the engine.

The biggest risk is of washing the oil off the cylinder walls. It will cause the rings to rub right on the cylinder walls... Bad news!
Definately get that taken care of right away.

Just what is causing it to run that rich? Jammed injector?

I wouldn't worry too much about the oil pump. It will probably be alright.

At the very least it'll destroy your cat. Your o2 sensor already no doubt needs to be replaced.
Can't really help too much with the 944 specific stuff though

I believe the problem is due to a bad tune on my Tec II(this is on my 86 Turbo). I'm having that looked at this week and hopefully they can fix it. There's no cat or O2 sensor as far as I know, so they're safe. But it was run pretty hard as I was on the track(Lime Rock) at the time. I just hoping there's no major damage. Thanks guys.

besides the ring issue, fuel is a really poor lubricant and when mixed with the oil will damage bearings.

Your catch can had pure gas in it, no oil? That's really strange!

To get the gas out of the oil, you replace the oil. I'd get it fixed before driving it again. What do your plugs look like?
