Default gauge questions

Does anyone have a picture of what gauges went in an 84 944?

The PO of my car put white faces on everything but the tach. My spedo is off and I'm wondering if he just put on a white face that had the numbers in the wrong place. I kinda doubt the origional went to 160.

I have another whole set, that has red markings on it that I would rather use anyway, I'm just not sure if they will work.

Second question.

Has anyone replaced their origional oil pressure gauge with an autometer or VDO gauge that reads in lbs? Do you need a different sending unit?

I'm thinking of replacing that and putting in a water temp gauge in place of my clock.

the original speedo does go to 160 and has yellow markings.

i have an extra three gage cluster, trip odo doesn't work, and would trade for the white face gages if you're intrested.

I don't have the white face for the tach.

The gauges I want to try and use have red markings, but the speedo only goes to 85.

I wonder what could be making the speedo read wrong, passed a radar gun with a readout on it today, gun said 33, gauge said 40.

Stock were yellow on black.
As for the incorrectness, could be that gauges weren't stuck properly or your wheels / tires. Although 7 mph off at 33, I'd say it was the former.

Well the tires are the same size as the ones on the sticker in the door. What do you mean by the gauges not being "stuck" properly?

There is a looped spring that returns the speedometer needle to zero. When he took the original gauge face off to put on the new one, the spring was not properly tensioned (spring was too loose) when the needle was on - thus, a low or (in your case) high reading.

Since the gauges are stuck on, the Zero could have been put 10 degrees away from where the stock Zero was and glued down.
Don't know of the setup, probably not terribly difficult to goof up though.
Just an idea though

Thanks again,
just went and checked, needle is sitting about 3/16" above the pin.

Anyone know any reason why the red/black gauges wouldn't work?

Or if a new VDO oil pressure gauge (in lbs.) would work with the same sending unit?

Yes, a VDO guage in Lbs would work with the existing sender, all VDO guages use similar sender values. 5 Bar is about 80 PSI. Check out
"lspeedo.com" , local place here that does/has alot of stock of VDO guages. Check out the cockpit white series.

Great, So I will replace mu oil pressure gauge and either put in a real temp gauge in place of the clock or maybe a voltmeter...

Decisions, decisions

I've been thinking about, re-doing the dash cluster...

Keeping the spedo and tach, putting in a 2 5/8 fuel and volt meter, one on each side. Then putting the temp down where the clock was.

Could make a new gauge housing easy enough, would just have to get some flat lenses for the tach and spedo.

If the new gauge faces are just stuck over the old, if you look closely there is a registration mark near zero on the lip that sticks up that the pointer should point to (at least there was on the tach). If it's a totally new face that completely replaces the old one you're on your own.

Funny, I was just thinking about the oil pressure gauge. I found out yesterday that the stock sending unit has 18mm threads. VDO doesn't offer that. I figured the stock one would work because 5 bar is roughly 80psi but I was not sure. Thanks Mr. Avionics.

You're going to have to get the fuel gauge recalibrated. A recalibrated fuel gauge (including gauge) was about $75 from North Hollywood Speedometer a couple of years ago. I have to order one for the race car.

Doing the flat lens is easy. I did it for my race car tach.
