Default OT-Anyone with a VW Corrado-HELP

Can someone suggest a good, CHEAP muffler or cat-back for a 1990 g60 Corrado?

Went out at lunch today to notice that mine was either stolen or fell off. Can't spend a ton because of repairs I'm making on the P-car this month, but want to get something of quality. The VW is my daily driver, so I need to get it fixed fast.

Anyone have experience with Techtonics? I've seen their cat-backs with either a Flowmaster or a Borla muffler for a reasonible price.

I believe either Techtonics or Gillet (Neuspeed?) were good.....I've been out of the Dub life for a bit.

I've heard good things about Techtonics stainless steel. Not sure if it makes sense to spend the extra $$ to get the Borla muffler. Also, not sure if the alumized ones are any good.

I had one of their cat backs on an '84 Scirocco, Very nice piece for the price, but that was a different car and a long time ago. I also didn't end up having it that long so I don't know about longevity. I think I installed it in the fall of '96 and the car was only used for a year after that at the most.

Edit: I don't think I spent all that much at the time so I doubt I sprung for SS.

I don't remember there being a choice of muffler back then, just stainless or aluminized. It may have been one of the ones that's available now or something entirely different, good quality whatever it was. If you were to call them they might know what they were using back then, I'm 95% sure it was fall of '96, car was hit a few months later and I drove the remains of it until after I got married in 8/97 at which point she got a new car and I got her hand-me-down. Funny how that worked, I got even the following fall when I'd had enough of driving the Isuzu and announced I was replacing it with a 944.

Ok, thanks Dave!

Anyone else with Techtonics experiences to share? Flowmaster or Borla? Aluminized or stainless?

lol...I know Corrados quite well, I've had a few. You on Vortex?

Anyway...it just depends on what you're looking for. I'm in So Cal so I could always go for the aluminized systems to save a few bucks. Being in PA, I guess you'd need SS?

Techtonics aren't bad...fitment on mine wasn't the greatest, but from others I've spoken with mine was the exception.

I don't think it matters much, they are pretty much all the same. Just some pipe and a muffler, nothing special.

You just have to decide what size, which metal, and the muffler you want.

For a daily driver, I'd say 2.25", which is the common size. Stainless if you're in salt/snow/water, otherwise it doesn't much matter. As for the muffler, I've used Walker/Dynomax and Borla. Both were fine.

The only other suggestion I have is to add a small (18-24") glasspack behind the cat in the center pipe. It will mellow out the sound and make it more "mature." I add this to all of my cars w/ aftermarket exhausts now because it sounds so great. Good luck!

Go to VWVortex.com and ask. It's a great source of info.

FWIW, the stock mufflers on 944s are aluminized steel, and they do last quite a long time.

Thanks guys. I ended up going with the 2.25" Techtonics cat-back with the Flowmaster. Plus I got a resonated center pipe, hopefully that will mellow it out a bit. I got the aluminized because I need to save money. We do have the snow/salt issue in PA, but as long as I wash the car often, I should be ok.

Anyway, thanks for the input!
