Bummin, where to get triple square?
#18
hmm, i've used the napa tool on some NASTY bolts, and they came out fine. that said i didn't reuse the crappy bolts, but i'd suggest using brakleen or something to get out all the grit and nasty crap out of the stuff before you put the tool in, and put it in square and as deep as it'll go and it'll be fine.

You know, in their name it says "warehouse." That means they deal in volume. No one who deals in volume wants to deal with a $3 order. I've never ordered there and bought less than $300 worth of stuff. Every time I've gotten free shipping (1st order over $100 is free and then they send you free shipping offers forever after that). They also have warehouses in many locations which means they ship quickly. Somehow, I don't see how it's bullsh*t.

maybe 5.00 or something.. but it still seems stupid, warehouse or not.. in my opinion, any business should be customer biased,, and that means any customer. if you advertise a part at 3.00, to me, you should be able to get it for 3.00 (plus shipping).. otherwise list the part for more if its not worth your time to package it.

If they did business by that philosophy, then they wouldn't be able to offer the complete set of 4 triple square tools for HALF what SK themselves offer it for. If you only want to make a $3 purchase, then that's just something you'll have to deal with. You can't tell me that there isn't $50 worth of tools on there that you could use?

perhaps there is. but i dont thinktheres 50dollars i can spare right now on tools. to each his own i suppose... i just dont believe in overcharging some to underprice other more expensive items... but i do understand your point.. dont get me wrong. just obviously in my position it is hard to agree with it.

I got my 4-pack of 6/8/10/12mm triple-square tools from Kragen Auto-parts for $12/set. Kinda like the Autozone outfit. The only problem I saw with them was that they had slightly tapered and rounded tips. So I grinded down the tip by about 1mm so that the tool would fit a larger diameter section into the bolts. Also the sharp edges & corners from grinding a flat tip really bite well into the bolts. Used them for 6 years now and have done 3 engine-rebuilds, countless CV-joints and 4 clutches without any problems. Personally, I don't think its the tools that counts, it's the steadiness of the hand that uses them.

Pep Boys has the 4 bit set for around $15. It's made by Lisle. You can find the part number I posted not long ago by doing a search on "CV joints."
FWIW, if you want the SK tool, just look up a local distributor for your area in the link Dal posted and pick it up tomorrow. If I found one in the Caribbean, I'm sure you could find one locally in New England.
Specifically it's No. 45438 (8mm triple square bit socket). Cost me $15.

Race Car
When I needed one I checked at 4-5 chain auto parts places with no luck. I forgot to bring the part # when I went to NAPA and the guy couldn't find it, I checked the small display with no luck. Next I tried a big local tool store (carries SK), they didn't have it and couldn't find it in the catalog. Finally I went a few miles out of my way to an old fashioned auto parts place (ie. not a chain) They had the individual tools in Lisle packaging (tool is stamped with KD part number), $7. Then the weather got cold again so I blew it off for a while, I finally got under the car last weekend and this thing worked fine, it wouldn't last forever if used on a regular basis but I don't plan to need it that often and at $7 it's already earned it's keep.
Check the old store that's been there since before the chains moved in, they've survived the competition for a reason.

thats kinda retarded... just because it is inexpensive doesn't mean its not quality or functional.
i'll laugh my butt off at you 10 years down the road when i'm still using the same $7 tool and it's still working perfectly.
use it right and it'll last.

I used my 10mm Lisle bit three times before it twisted about 15 degrees trying to remove a particularly tight camshaft bolt. Cheap tools are cheap tools. You don't get good quality, hardened steel with tight tolerances and not pay for it. And at $30 for the 4 bit set of SK bits, is it really worth it to buy the Lisle set for $15 and have them wear out after a couple of uses?
