Default New Laptop.. driver/software issue.. please help

Folks -

I picked up a new Sony Vaio PCG-GRT170 laptop and promply wiped the HD for a fresh install of 2000 Pro. Apparently Sony does not distribute OEM Microsoft software, only a recovery CD. My particular laptop was a 2 week old open box that did not come with any software.

I'm set up and running fine, however some of the onboard functions don't work. (volume buttons, zoom features) I cannot find any of the OEM bundled drivers/hardware on any of the sites.

Anyone have a GRT Series Vaio or ideas where I can get the info?
Thanks

You may have to install xp to get everything working. My buddy bought a new Vaio and took xp off and put 2000 pro on and the video drivers wouldn't work nor could he find supported drivers. When he called Sony, they said that with the new Vaio only xp would support the drivers.

Sony's also responsible to provide you CD disks for all the software that was supposed to be in the box if you have the receipt. They might charge shipping, they might not - but it's a legal obligation on their part.

I'm not sure if they have to provide me anything.. since it was an open box purchase.

Chris - XP Home came on here. I have XP Pro.. but lost the CD key. I tossed on 2000 because I know it pretty well, and I like it better. All I really want is for the onboard stuff to work. Everything else is fine.

Still having problems finding the drivers for it.

Reinstall the xp home from the CD. This will reinstall all the recommended OEM drivers. Then install win2Kpro over it and replace (or dual boot to either os) XPHome. You will have a choice. The upgrade selection will replace Win2k in favor on XPHome.

If you need a cd key or some other install questions for a temporary install I have one. Lemme know.

Good luck buddy!

If it's like other VAIOs, you are missing an applet called HotKey Server to control all of the function keys. Check the sony site for an older laptop's drivers and you'll find a Windows 2000 version that should work.

Also, now that you have a VAIO, understand that Sony is little to no help on operating system changes. They regularly lie and tell you another OS won't even run on their laptop. But their hardware is pretty similar across the range and over the years, so with diligence you can get most anything running properly.

As for your OEM software, if you can find another owner of that model on the net and get the part number, you can order a new set from the Sony Parts and Accessories Center. You must have the part number though.

Emanuel (list admin for the Sony 505 Mailing List, currently running 2 VAIOs)
