Default Old Clutch Disc (photo :) )

I had the clutch replaced by Bob Farmer back in Indiana two weeks ago. Leslie has been driving the 85 since then, and I finally got a chance to meet up with her in Nashville this weekend.

I drove the 85 all weekend - and my god, but Mr. Farmer transformed my car. I don't know what I would do without him as a mechanic - his work is just that good.

Anyway, I thought I would post this picture of my old clutch disk. It was original, with over 100k on it (shut up, Wade ) Bob told Leslie that he had never seen one this bad on a car that "didn't come in towed behind a pick-up."

Enjoy!

There's just nothing there... I thought that someone who didn't know what the rubber center looks like might not get the full effect if I showed them that

That's the rubber "Doughnut" damper. And that's a HEAFTY chunk missing!

Went out on mine in the exactly the same spot... How in the world did you manage to shift???? I had a horrible time driving mine back home (clutch was almost useless, I had to match revs and jam it into gear)

Did he replace it with the Sachs Spring-centered one? I've been driving on that one ever since..

here's a pic of mine when it went out... not quite as bad as yours, but you can see where it exploded in the center and the bits of rubber were chewed up by being pressed against the flywheel.

Amazingly, the car drove and shifted just fine. Leslie drove it from Nashville, TN to Bob's shop in Indianapolis without any trouble what-so-ever.

The only thing to really let you know that something was wrong was a distinct vibration at 3k that would transmit through the entire shifter. That's how I first realized that the rubber itself had gone out. The "jolt" when coming on and off throttle took longer to develop.

Bob replaced it with the Sachs spring disk; to tell you the truth, I probably would have had him use a rubber-center one again if they were still readily available.

I bet the clutch in my '84 looks like that. If you are driving in a low gear and you lift off the throttle even the slightest bit, the whole car starts bucking like a bronco.

Jerad,

You sexy beast I was wondering what you were up to! How are things up North? You wouldn't be interested in making a trip down here over 4th of July weekend, would you? Matt and I are trying to talk Stephen into having $hitbox fest '04 again in Monroe...

Les and I were just talking about you this weekend - I hope that everything's going alright. Miss you, man.

JEEESH!! That is incredible that the tranny still engaged without a problem with center in that condition, let alone to have a rubber center engage well after 20 years either way!

Haha, mine had pretty much no rubber left with 90k miles on it. Eventually the failsafe broke, if you look on the backside there is a triangular piece that has 3 welds to the entire disc. It breaks after the center goes and just allows the shaft to spin. The clutch change was fun stuff.

Mine looked at least that bad when I finally got it changed. You could see how the "tabs" on the failsafe were taking lots of hits. Still shifted fine, just had a tremendous clank and jerk if you didn't baby it.
