If I may add something to this, having started this all a few days ago. First let me say that my brother bought the 951. More bang for the buck and he is on a budget. Second let me say that having driven one when we were looking for his, I was extremly impressed. Very well balanced and I felt very confident after only a few minutes behind the wheel. I will say that I had a very big grin on my face when I climbed out of the car. That being said, I love my 911's (love all 911's actually) and look forward to becoming a better driver one DE at a time. If I were so inclined I imagine I could turn a faster lap time in the 951 than I could the 911 (at this point in my "career"). Lap times, or the ability to turn fast ones that is, wasn't one of the main considerations at this point. Both cars look great, the 951 will be the better performer for the money but probably most importantly a similarly equiped and conditioned SC would more than likely be 5 to 10k more than the 951.

The argument that says you should start with a harder to drive car does not hold water for me. As I said in an early post on this thread, both my brother and myself are truly interested in becoming better drivers with lap times not being very important to us at this juncture. The individuals comitment to following the right line and becoming smooth means more than the car he/she drives. Yes, it will be easier to drive the 951 faster but, with the help of an instructor and the right attitude, bad habits need not be developed now matter what you are sitting in.

Just my .02 cents as they say. Thanks again.

LOL.....Yep...it happens sometimes...always amusing to see it when it does. I see we have similar mindsets about the whole thing. I do love the 911s myself, although my desire is in the 930/964T/993TT department....I'm addicted to turbo power Just planning on adding to my Porsche garage!

I hope you all enjoy the 951! They are a blast to drive!

Hopefully we won't have to say it too soon as it was changed 6k miles ago.

Leland, I'm more of a French's yellow mustard man myself. Thanks.

yeah its probably broken right now.

sounds like a typical 911 owner there. or someone who's had 1 bad experience with a timing belt. they aren't time bombs, you know, they're engine components. and when one breaks it's not the end of the world.

-Mike- i'd still pick the 911 for track duty

Mike,

Are you hoping for this to be the case. I am a bit confused by your posts.

first off let me say congrats on your purchase, either one would make a fine track car. its my personal preference to have a 911 for track duty, however my finances permit me now (barely) to only have my 944 for street and track duty. the debates are endless on 951 vs 911. they are not equal cars. the 911 is better set up for driving faster at limits despite what some people will tell you here. the problem is that 911s that are affordable to most of us aren't the highest performing versions, and they are versions that will tend to be a bit more tailhappy. that's not necessarily a bad thing, but people here seem to like a more forgiving car in terms of handling.

as far as that timing belt comment goes, i was being sarcastic towards zois. the timing belt is most likely fine. no there is no guarantee that it is, nor is there a guarantee that the timing chain in any of his air cooled cars is any good. that being said. it's not the end of the world if it breaks. yeah it sucks to have to fix, but hey, its just a car, fix it, drive it, enjoy it.

i'm sure you plan on enjoying your car, as well you should.

more people on this board need to do that instead of bickering about what model beats up the other models daddy.

Mike,
Thanks for the clarification. Things got a little wierd with the last couple of posts. Never meant to start a 911 vs. 951 battle, although I should have seen it coming. Myself, as you can tell from my tag line, I like 911's. In this case the 951 is, we hope, the better choice for my brother at this point.

I am pumped for a couple of reasons. One, I get to spend more time with my brother and two I get to drive his car from time to time. Like I said, I really dig the car and am glad to get a chance to experience not just another Porsche but another group of enthusiasts as well.

To this, I'm going to reply with the words I replied to my former-87-targa-owner of an uncle after he said "ahh one of the watercooleds, huh"

"yeah... but it still whoops the **** out of yours!"
