Thanks for the input guys much appreciated. Usually I am on the 993 board and I always thought that it was pretty active but this place really cooks. I have to say that it eases the mind about the 951 knowing there is this kind of resource. Opening the hood of the 951 and looking at what apeared to be an overturned bowl of spaghetti was rather daunting especially when compared to the SC engine compartment.

I think the comments regarding the ease of driving the 2 cars are spot on. Only 5 minutes into driving the 951 I felt very confident whereas I am still learning in my 993. I guess it is kind of like what they say about the boxter..it is an easier car to drive fast. I think if my brother goes with the 951 we may have to trade off a bit at Summit Point in April.

I have heard people make similar comments to z-mans regarding modded vs. un modded cars. I just put a suspension in my 993 and was advised by someone with more track experince that I should drive the car stock first before modding. I guess the theory is that better suspension or stickier tires will mask driving flaws although I don't see it that way. I feel that if you are dedicated to becoming a better driver and listen to the instructors you should improve naturally no matter what you are driving. If it is important to you to follow the corect line and have good/smooth technique that can be focused on in any car. What Brett says kind of makes sense to me as with my car I felt I would have to re-learn the car everytime I made a change to the handling charecteristics.

I would say the 951 is in the lead. As it seems the choice is either a really nice 951 or a just Ok SC.

Thanks again everyone for your input. Looks like its the 951 as little brother made the deal this evening. Will head out to Chicago on the 6th of April to fetch it and do the DE at Summit Point on the way home. Thanks again.

Just a thought that is independent of the two cars' performance capabilities - for the price range, the 951 would definitely be in better shape.

and not to sound girlie but looking at a 911 thats not a 993 or 996. looks even more dated than the 944. so keeping the car for a longer time could be easier on the eyes in a 951. but looks usually dont go fast i guess.

I got to ride in someone's highly modified 911 SC at an autocross once. I nearly lost control of all bodily functions. Of course, I've never been in a 951, so I don't know what a track-prepared one would feel like.

Stock 951 keeping up with SC?

Are you kidding? Have you driven both cars stock? That is a ridiculous comparison. A 951 is 5 or 6 seconds faster at Lime Rock with the same driver.

I know you are probably joking around.

Funny, I'd been thinking that an SC would be better matched by an NA or a 944S

i vote SC. at the end of the day there's nothing like the sound of that air cooled flat 6. don't let these weenies tell you that the engine's in the wrong place... in fact i think its a better setup than what we have. it comes with its own set of driving styles. the only thing better would be style of the 356/1, mid engined. an 'old' 911 can be very fast if driven properly. if i had my choice, i'd have one of each though (944 and 911 that is) because they are both fun, but the potential of a 911 (with same hp) vs a 951 is greater (not to mention its a much more raw car). brake later into the turn, accelerate earlier, mmm ok i gotta stop, or i'm gonna have to sell my car to get one.

as far as what these guys say, i'll go with the fact that a 911 is a much more raw 'drivers car'. manual steering (at least on the early ones), the engine sound, less sound deadening (esp. in the targas) and they are pretty light. the 951 feels like a pig, its fast alright, but heavy. given enough horsepower, even a ton of bricks can do 11s in the 1/4

anyhow thats my thoughts on the idea, go 911!

I say 951! Only thing is (even though the car is bought already), because it already IS a track car, watch out that it hasn't been beat to hell on the track by the PO! It would be like buying a used Taxi cab.

Just a thought. Otherwise, bang for the buck = 951

The 951 is a neutrally balanced RWD sports car that would easily beat a 911 SC, or even a later 911, around a track without breaking a sweat. How is that not a true driver's car?

Though you will get a biased opinion on this board, and though you're brother will no doubt be happy with either choice, I say go with the 951. While both have their positive points, the 911 forcing you to learn to drive it better, and the 951 for being a neutral, forgiving handler (and track prep'ed!), the 951 is the better choice in my eyes. When learning to drive it, it won't bite you in the ***, and it will prove to be a contender to many other cars on the track while doing so

What ever you say FSAEracer03... The fact IS 951's and 944 series as a whole are EASIER to drive at the limits. reason being they are well balanced cars. any Green driver can get in a 944 series car and go drive fast.. the cars are well balanced and fun to drive, but they can make a newbie driver think he is good and when in fact HE IS NOT! and ... A 911 being a HARDER car to drive at limits will TEACH a driver to respect the car and to not unsettele it. and be smooth because if you are NOT it WILL BITE!.. where as a 944 series car will let you slide a bit..
it's like a school teacher who lets grades easy.. you pass easy and think you're smart..when in fact you are NOT!//
what ever you say! You can call my opinion DUMD all you want FACT is I am right.
911's will take a more sorted out driver to drive fast!.. it's a FACTmy friend..
so believe what you want, I willnot loose any sleep over it.

Hey FSAEracer03
This is one of the biggest Diarrhea of the mouth comments I have heard in maybe a good 2 years!!

"The 951 is a neutrally balanced RWD sports car that would easily beat a 911 SC, or even a later 911, around a track without breaking a sweat. How is that not a true driver's car?"

Good day you bore ME!

Hmmmm...I suppose we can look to the factory for the resolution to this question. Just look at the predominance of the 911 in Porsche racing (factory team as well as independent teams). End of debate.

Sean, by your logic, you'd be best served driving a V8 powered unicycle. I mean, talk about "being a HARDER car to drive at limits will TEACH a driver to respect the car and to not unsettele it".

A V8 powered unicycle will take a more sorted out driver to drive fast that a 911! it's a FACT my friend!

I cry foul! The 911 has been in production for over 40 years! The 951: 4 years.

With those stats, it is interesting to see the abundance of 951's in PCA club racing AND in DE's.

Ah statistics - what a wonderful 'science!'
