this is a stupid question.. but where is the dme chip located? someone with a 944 told me theirs was under the passenger floorboard if you pull the carpet back... but i have a '87 924S and the carpet does not pull back easily..

before i pull the carpet back is it really back there? or is it somewhere else?

It's under the steering wheel like the early 944. Just look under there and you will see it.
