The Ziex 512 is a good tire for the $$$$'s. 4 mounted and balanced for under $400 including tax is unheard of. T he Ziex's ride much smoother than other perfomance tires. Good for comfort, but you won't get that "feel every bump in the road" effect. If you push it hard into a corner, they tend to feel softer, i.e. sidewall not as stiff. For every day driving, they're great. If you tend to want that "track car" feeling, then they aren't for you.

I think you're using the incorrect tire size - the stock cookies / phone dials used a 215/60/15 tire, by using the 225/50/15 your tire is a little wider and thinner (sidewall) which might be okay, but might also cause the sidewall to bow outward to accommodate the extra width. This would possibly give some "mushiness" in hard cornering.

I think the best way to accommodate a thinner sidewall is to increase the rim diameter (upgrade to 16s or 17s) and then adjust the sidewall height to yield the appropriate total outside diameter of wheel plus tire.

Both the Falkens and the Yokos are summer tires, best on dry pavement, adequate on wet - NOT intended for any sort of snow. If you have them on your car and it snows, pull over, leave the car somewhere and call a friend for a ride home. They WILL suck.

Snow is not a problem, I am in Houston, TX.

Do you think I should stick to the stock tire size. I was going to 225 for a little wider tire.

I don't know. . . I've only ever used the recommended 215s (they look wide enough for me). I'm sure someone on here has done it though. I'm just thinking that if you want the thinner sidewalls for harder cornering, you might want to just go with 16" wheels (I think the correct profile would be a 50 then, with a difference of something like 4% in diameter and resulting speedo error). I asked someone about this not too long ago. Try Racer-X's 951 page (forget the url, just do a search for it). He's got some useful information on rim / tire swaps.

Thes are my opinions only. You'll probably be happy with your decision if most of your driving is shorter around town cruising. I took my 225-50/15 Bridgestones off my cookie cutters and went back to the stock 215-60 with ES-100's. They seem to feel so much better on the car than the 225's. I thought a 4% change would be unnoticeable and was wrong. I really could feel the smaller dia of the 225's on acceleration around town resulting in earlier shifting. You'll be using 5th gear more at freeway speeds also. Every little change in the power band shows on an N/A. I never really felt the wider 225's handled any better to be honest. They left a larger gap in the wheel well which I thought looked a bit funny at stock ride height. The changes aren't enough to ruin the car but it did lose that long legged feeling Porsche is known for. Ifeel it's always a good idea to try to stick as close as possible to OEM diameter specs. It's a shame that the tire choices in 15" are becoming so limited, a 225-55 would be great. I nearly cried when RE-71's were discontinued for my Miata...great cheap tire for it's time.

I've got 16" phones on my n/a with 225/50's, and I notice that the front end tends to track with dips and imperfections in the road, making the front end feel squirrely. I have another set of 16" tires with some 205/55's that hopefully will eliminate the problem.

MachSnell, you want to see the 10K mile Ecsta MX that came apart on the highway on Friday? It would be the same piece of **** I have been complaining about being a pile for months.

Do yourself a favor and stay so far away from these that you cant even see the name.

Alok, I sent you a PM. I'll call inventory services and see if I can find the 750's for you. They would be my 1st choice. Let me know what size 215/60/15 is stock 225/50/15 works fine.

Arrrggh! Hey Kevin, care to send some 750's out this way?

I got a big suprise last night when I pulled my summer tires out and saw what was left of them. The 730's looked like I'd get a few more months out of them when I put them away but now I don't know what I could have been thinking, the rears are at the wear bars and the fronts are bald on the inner third. No way the fronts will get through tech for Lime Rock tomorrow.
Since I've been out of work for a few months I don't like the idea of just throwing a set of tires on the credit card, I'd hate to pass on Lime Rock now that I'm in but $275 there + tires + pissed off wife.

That brings me back to this thread, anyone have any thoughts about running new ES100s on the front and leaving the RE-730s on the back for a couple days of DE? The car is currently set up with 205s and 225s but I'd like to switch to 225s and 245s, that means that for now there'd be 225/50-16 all around (until the rears get replaced).

I would think that for DE you would want to stay away from mixing and matching tires. Now that Kevin is on board he cant cut you some good deals, if they are not good enough, let me know, I can usually do the same or better.

I'm certainly not thrilled with the prospect of mixed tires but a set of 4 of what I want is out of the question for now and I think I'd be better off with 2 quality tires and the RE-730s in the back than I would be with 4 new but lesser tires. I need to do something quickly.

I just got back from the local Firestone store. Was hoping there might be a pair of RE-730s left at "closeout price," nothing in the region in 225/50-16 or 205/55-16.

The guy I spoke with mentioned Fuzion? (SP?), a lower priced line made by Bridgestone, he said "they have a lot of bridgestone in them." Only problem is he couldn't tell me anything about them yet, he hadn't sold any yet and hadn't even got the brochures for them yet. The price is tempting though, in line with the ES100.
Any of you tire guys have any (non-corporate, off-the-record) insite on these??
