Default S2 grinding transmission from 1->2

In my s2, shifting from 1st to 2nd above 4500 rpm, it grinds. Below 4500 rpm is no problem. I would like to know from you guys if this is definetly a syncro mesh problem. Can changing gear oil with a specific brand solve this problem. If so, which brand and blend please. If not, What is the best way to fix? How much do used s2 trannys go for?

My tranny has about 180K on it.

Thanks in advance

The 2nd gear synchro is a common problem on the 944 transmissions. Like Tom said, try switching gear oil.

Try Redline MTL or MT90. My '83 was grinding. I first used Mobil 1, 100%synthetic. It was worse than ever! Then I tried the MTL. It made an amazing difference! I now use the car for track use only with no problem. Those two lubes are GL-4 rated. Most off the shelf gear lubes are GL-5 rated. The "5" stuff is too slick for the synchros. The additives are also corrosive to the brass synchro rings. There may be others that work well. Stay with the factory recommended GL-4 rated lubes.

Swepco does wonders also. I can feel the difference after when I went to swepco just I didn't have any grinding sounds it was hard to shift when cold and now it's better with Swepco 201 I think it's something like 90w75.

When my S2 did just that, it turned out to be a failing clutch disc. I hope yours is a minor fix.
