Has anyone done this successfully? My car's lid needs recovering and Performance Products - admittedly the highest retail price out there, wants $125...I don't freaking think so!
But a quick look makes me think I can strip the vinyl off there and re-cover it, or maybe just re-cover over existing. Anyone with experience? Or know a much cheaper source for a new replacement?

Wade B. did it. I think he posted his procedure. Send him a PM and he can tell you.
I'm going to redo mine when I recover my seats. I'm going to use the material from the seat back of the old upholstery to cover the lid.

Yep. I did it myself for $5. (The cost of the sheet of leather.)
All you need is a phillips screwdriver, scissors, and some glue. (and maybe some clamps to hold the leather down while the glue dries, I just used the screws...)
Let me see if I can find some pictures.
I used some really soft and supple leather in leu of the hard, thick factory leather. However, if the foam padding is cracked badly underneath the leather bit, I recommend either using a thicker layer of leather to cover it, or placing a sceond or third layer below the final layer. The deep cracks will eventually press thier way through to the surface if the leather you use is too soft and supple.
Also, you can take a sheet of leather, turn it around and glue it to the top of the inside of the console to replace the felt.

BTW when you go to the leather store to buy a sheet of leather, you can save $$ by buying 1'x1' scrap leather, but just pick out a sheet that doesn't have any scarrings on it. After time the scarrings get more pronounced - especially on the back "suede" side of the leather.

Dan; like Pete said, I did this a few months ago, the results were REAL good. Search past posts under my name. I think the title of the post was "Tired of trying to find a console lid?" Good luck.

Good info and I will take it on.
But leather? I haven't looked that closely at mine but it seems too thin to be leather. Yes, it is definitely the orignal. I just assumed it was vinyl and figured I'd go to Naughahyde to replace it.
Too bad I have to kill all those little Naugha's though!

I just tried and found it Dan (by my user name, use "6 months or sooner"). If I had more time I'd do the link for you. And like it says, I found a good grade of deep grained, stretchable black vinyl that worked very well.

If you want to spend the money, I'm certain you could.
Or you could opt for a tough heavy grade black (or other) cloth and have "Porsche" in a contrasting color or "Joe's Baby" or any damned thing you could think of.
Personally, that thought went out of my head faster than it came in, but that's just my taste. K.I.S.S. 'ya know?
